Why is the Golden Ratio called such even though it has nothing to do with Gold? Do scientists just make up whatever names they want?

The Golden Ratio actually dates back to the Ancient Greek. A rectangle with side lengths forming a ratio of (1 + sqrt5)/2 (the golden ratio) is apparently very aesthetically pleasing. I believe it had no other significance to them.

There were also silver and bronze ratios, but they've been lost forever

Look up the divided line (Plato). He splits a line in 4 parts each related to another via the "golden" ratio. I understand that this does not give the golden ratio more meaning but it had a lot of significance outside of being just aesthetically pleasing.

it's Golden as in 'fuck that's a golden ratio'

And ancients thought it was aesthetically pleasing.
You can find claims that it determines the dimension of things like the Parthenon.
However, when you measure photographs, it takes a bit of imagination to get the building to fit.
Furthermore, when people are given a group of cardboard rectangles with assorted aspect ratios and asked to select which they like best, it's rarely 1.618

The ratio DOES turn up in practical problems.
The ratio of successive numbers in the Fibonacci sequence approaches the golden ratio.

And it's the optimum solution to some packing problems.

there are actually some really neat properties of the golden ratio (the value is called phi)
phi= (a+b)/a = a/b
phi=(1-sqrt5)/2=sqrt(1+sqrt(1+sqrt(1+...
phi^2=phi+1 and 1/phi=phi-1
sin(pi/2 - i ln(phi))=sqrt(5)/2
sin(i ln(phi))=i/2
phi=1 + 1/phi = 1 + 1/(1 + 1/phi) = 1 + 1/(1 + 1/(1 + 1/(...

It is aesthetically pleasing because of its relation to the fibonacci sequence

no "ancients thought" thats why

because english people are stupid.

it's called the divine ratio if you translate it correctly from latin.

that's why I hate that english is a "world language" you idiots all think the roots of words are also in english... unculutured swines

>I understand that this does not give the golden ratio more meaning but it had a lot of significance outside of being just aesthetically pleasing.

But that is exactly what gives it its meaning. The line can be divided infinite times, really it ties into the Allegory of the Cave.

Pic related. Observations are but illusions.

>>9722010
Correct. It's the same reason retards confused alchemy's ultimate goal as "transmuting gold" when they really were refining materials to the luster and purity that gold exemplifies, not actually trying to make gold.

if casually you are jonh wheeler can you make a vid calculating the neccesary resolution of a screen in a vr headset to be able to look inside the vr app in a virtual monitor and read text in a quality of 1080p? would be cool
