>the study of knowledge reality and existence is accomplished by science not by thinkin' real hard
Politics has little to do with knowledge of reality, and everything to do with philosophy. Incidentally, politics is what allows the academically inclined to pursue their surrogate activity. Were it not for modern society and the philosophies that predated it and made sure of its existence, many a great scientist would, at present, be a second-rate general or advisor to the king.

>> No.9702124

>>9702114
That doesn't make a degree in philosophy any more useful in the present.

And considering philosophers never actually reach any verifiable conclusion to any moral dilemma, its use in politics is negligible at best.

>And considering philosophers never actually reach any verifiable conclusion to any moral dilemma, its use in politics is negligible at best.
They reach a conclusion nonetheless, which scientists - the obedient lapdogs of the men in power - do not.

The Constitution of the United States is a product of philosophy, and it is inarguably the most influential document ever written and subsequently claimed as the law of a land that would become a great power. Meanwhile, science and its by-products have been used to maim and kill untold numbers of people in various petty conflicts in the history of mankind. Think about that.

>this is all objectively false
But how do we know its false? What is false and what is true are subject to our own interpretations, which are collected by fallible senses. In this sense, there is no such thing as objective fact, or is there? How do we know that what we sense is real? I can commit suicide, but if I never really existed, or have proof of existence, then did I actually commit suicide? And if we don't know if we have died, can we know that we live? Or are they simply the result of our own humanity imposing meaning onto atoms that may or may not exist which may or may not be moving in the exact patterns we believe. Can life be proven? Can existence be proven? How is there really any sense of objectivity when the information that lead us to believe so is based on senses, and is thus subjective?

I'm hoping to go to grad school for a Ph.D or at least a MS in stats, how are your studies going? That's assuming that you are in grad school for stats, not just reiterating the post title. I may have misinterpreted that part.

I'm hoping to go to grad school for actuarial science.

Just made this thread because I see too many people in shit like sports management, media studies and journalism, and know that the market is going to dick them when they graduate.

What are you in rn?

But why major in it? There aren't any jobs that require one other than Philosophy Professor. Why not just minor in it while learning something more interesting/applicable. Or better yet, why pay money to go to school for Philosophy? You can easily find online lectures from the professors at the ivy leagues and hundreds of other useful resources online.

Oddly, if you get the BA, you're more likely to go into therapy or the like, while if you get the doctorate, you're likely to end up a guy who simply pushes pills based on the DSM, something a machine could do.

Anyways, I study economics with a minor in statistics, as my uni doesn't have pure econometrics bachelors. I'm currently a junior.

I'm hoping to go for a Ph.d or at least a masters in stat.

My GPA is high enough for me to be an undergrad research assistant, assuming I don't get dicked by this mandatory foreign language class, so I think I may have a decent shot.

No, we don't need philosophy because science draws conclusions based on empirical data and testing, not by conjecture, unless you're a psychologist.
And we sure as hell don't need people with philosophy degrees. Its basically choosing to be underemployed.

>students getting useless educations
I feel like that's close to it but the problem is it's the students making them useless. Hardly anyone plans their journey and many of them are just using a uni program to put off being an adult for another 4 years. There are things to do with soft majors like those but none of those people are interested in them or know they exist. Many of the parents of this generation of undergrads did not attend university so regardless of the program they see it as this big impressive thing, and then at graduation everyone is stunned that employers are not lining up to hire their special smartboi success story.

I always ask psych majors politely what they want to do after without attacking their choice and 99% of the time they just end up attacking themselves.

In the least elitist way possible, it appears to me by comparing different statistics and enrollment rates with the anecdotal experiences I've had with these kinds of people that STEM is mainly better because the students took the time to figure their plans out instead of just taking something to take it.
