On the topic of conspiracy theories and legitimate science.

I asked myself a question today. Is there any scientific discovery that would likely be covered up and/or suppressed?

Can you think of examples?

I think anything that seriously endangers the whole automobile and petroleum refining industry would be in danger of that. Just look at the list of the biggest companies in the world. The planet basically runs on oil.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_largest_companies_by_revenue

Completely unrelated: The discovery of hostile aliens (or aliens with unknown agendas). Many conspiracy theorists say that's the reason we stopped going to the moon. And I agree that this certainly would be a sufficient reason. Nobody will give a shit if NASA discovers some planet 1400 lightyears away with an atmosphere that contains life. But in our direct vicinity - people would freak the fuck out and demand some retarded actions.

You can build a sub critical reactor at home.

You need to isolate and purify uranium from fertilizer, which takes a shit ton of fertilizer and lots of time.

You then scavenge americium from smoke detectors and use their emission to hit a aluminium foil which will in turn produce the neutrons needed to begin fission.

You will get arrested if you try this.

It is quite well known that the NSA has been hindering public research on cryptology from the start. They tried to simply ban a crypto conference (although that failed) and used the classification of "(strong enough) cryptography as munitions" to stop publications. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernstein_v._United_States .
Of course, the NSA doesn't publish the research from their own cryptographers either.

Additionally, if it turns out that we can construct quantum computers to effectively solve the discrete log problem for current key-sizes, I wouldn't be surprised if some agency like the NSA got it earlier than the first public of these computers. "Unwanted pregnancy" ignores the fact the humans evolved to be monogamous because of infanticide. "Homosexual marriage" ignores the "gay uncle theory". "Global climate change" ignores the fact that there is no a global manifestation of a problem, just various local problems that people can and are adapting to. "Tribalism" ignores the fact that even in our most primitive hunter-gatherer societies, we are violent towards other tribes.

Is there an underlying theme to this? I think it's the corruption of science by anthropocentric thinking. In fact, when you dig down deep into it, there is actually not even a scientific theory that explains how humans are simultaneously "amoral animals" and "moral humans"--most of us just accept this premise without second thought. On the contrary, there is a scientific theory that supports my arguments: the evolution of ethics. The problem is, popsci is not interested in this stuff--they just want you to be herd animals. And we are not herd animals in our natural states. We are apex predators.

This is completely wrong. There have been a handful of studies that have *claimed* that vaccines cause autism, but none of them have *proved* anything because they are bad studies, full of errors. A faulty study which claims something false is relatively common. A study which "proves" something false is very rare. The former exists for vaccines and the latter does not.
