if you are real scientists you would not just dismiss it offhand, Maybe he has figured out a technique that actually works and does have a basis in reality.

There is a way to induce a pseudo-hibernation state where you only need to breathe once every five minutes or so. It may be similar to this case, where instead of just his breathing, he was able to slow down his metabolism enough so that he only needs to eat once a month or so. Its physiologically impossible for him to not eat or drink anything at all indefinitely. He may as well be immortal if that's the case.
