Honestly, we are lucky as hell.

Think about it. In any point in human history you could have been born. Electricity has been around for roughly 109 years. The human race? 100,000 years.

Seriously. This is just mind bogglingly fucked up. I could have been born in a time where eating babies was a typical Friday night. Or maybe I would build the pyramids. Then again that wouldn't be worth any recognition since I'd be crush by some jackass with a weak stone hand.

>> No.968382

what about the future? Imagine being born in a time where Immortality was about to be possible and lived to get it.

That beats electricity by a whole fucking lot.

>> No.968380

Now stop surfing 4chan and do some real science.
And you must not waste that privilege.

Yes Op we're lucky that our lives are spent :

Waking Up.
Going to 4chan.
Post.
Sleep.

OH THANK YOU FOR FUTURE

Better then:

Be born.

Get eaten.

Stop existing.

>> No.968405

You're looking at it wrong. Yeah, if we had to be born by now we lucked out, but what makes you think we had to be born right now? What if humans will still be around for 10 million years, with even cooler shit than what we have? Then not only were we born very early and into relatively shitty conditions, but if the population keeps growing at the rate it does we're also some of the very first - like 1% - to live when 99% of humanity will live better than us.

You can't compare us only to worse things and conclude we're lucky.

>> No.968409

Well the only thing I don't like about this time is the expectations
Seriously back then they just had to farm and survive. Now you have to compete and finish college and find a job...

>> No.968413

>>968405
There's no proof for that. For all you know we could die off at 3000 with relatively similar technologies due to formuladic plateaus.

>> No.968419

No matter when you are born, you will look back on past achievements and say

"BOY, I sure am lucky to have been born with all these great inventions!!"

And then you will look to the future and say

"Shit, man, I could have all this sweet gadgetry if I was born in 100 years..."

So shutup.

Sure, we could. That doesn't mean we will.

The best you can argue is that we are lucky to have been now given that we don't know what the future will hold. In the future, people may look back to now and think "those people were really unlucky" and they could be right, even if we don't realize it.

We're lucky to think we're so lucky.

>> No.968448

It would have taken the same luck to be born on a better date, so your point is irrelevant.

Yes, but the time period in which you are born shapes your personality. "You" would not exist at all in another time.

People have similar personalities and Identities. You'd be surprised by the origins of stereotypes. It's from the fact that most people promote them by proving them.

You're just making assumptions like OP.

>> No.968558

OP, if you were born at any other time, you wouldn't know what you were missing, thus you wouldn't feel "unlucky."

Thus, the chances of you being born in this time period is exactly 100% since the fact that you are contemplating this matter means you were born in this time period-- and thus feel lucky for it.

Its kind of like those people that say, "Wow look at all the properties of water, we sure are lucky to have such amazing things to look at!"

well no shit-- if water didn't have those properties, we wouldn't be here to admire it.
Image this: I throw a pencil in the air, and if it lands on its point and balances there, you will live, otherwise, you won't exist. Thus, in an infinite amount of throws, the pencil will land on its point and you will exist and you will stand in awe at how such a marvel could exist.

>> No.968580

OP here

me existing here has nothing to do with my contemplation. Time isn't a mental factor. and 100%? Based on what? You can prove that I will exist now but not that I couldn't have existed in another point in time. I know that "I" wouldn't be the same but my personality is genetic/chemical as environmental.

I am about to turn 20, and I know math up to calc 2, and am studying physics on my own for the summer before my first calc-based physics course.

We've been moving on a path towards less individual freedom and more government control in our lives...right now most people don't notice it but our rights are being restricted more and more as time goes on. And living forever-feasible, but practical? Probably not.
