struggling to reconcile my own lifestyle and habits with the knowledge that we are systematically killing our planet and its ecosystems through wreckless overconsumption and the myth of limitless growth. I feel morally compelled to drastically change the way I live, but am too weak in body and mind to do so. It all seems so futile, to shovel sand against the tide.

Focus on the task. The task at hand is survive. Look around you. Look inside you. War rages on in the microscopic level. The animals don't care about living. Why should you care about living too?
Limited growth doesn't mean we shouldn't try and see what is on the other side. Perhaps there is a way to get around the whole struggle. However it has rolled on since the beginning. Get up mother fucker. This world needs people like you. The only type of people who feel the weight of the world on their shoulder are the only ones who can move it.

We're born not too early to colonize the solar system. More material resources and land will eventually become available. We have technology to farm in deserts. It's self-absorbed, megalomane and childish to think in such big terms and to be depressed about it, you presume it fall onto you to even have a meaningful sentiment about such vasts concepts, your presume meaningful understanding when it is so vast you can not sincerely and honestly comprehend all of it.

It is an insincere and reprehensibly childish position OP.

You merely seek self-denial as a virtue because you are depressed with yourself and this way of thinking about the world is an externalized projection pointing away from yourself, you think you might reconcile this state within yourself by changing the world, the childish arrogance is astoundingly ugly and lacks maturity.

Western nations arent going to start gunning down people piecemeal when there is a mass exodus from famine, and if we are talking about a scenario where the lions share of africa simply cannot eat you are talking about many millions. Ergo it is in the best interest of the west to prevent it in the first place. Problem being that to do so would essentially represent the resurgence of colonial rule which people have a huge problem with.

Overconsumption is mostly a green myth. The fix for the environment is to get human population under control, and the way to do that is to raise the rest of the world out of poverty through industrialization. Of course, this all requires lots of economic and clean energy, but thankfully we have nuclear.

>> No.9685685

>the real reason is population growth, so overconsumption

>> No.9685698

>>9685685
Stop listening to Green Peace et al on this topic. They're liars. All of those sources only focus on particularly rich concentrations. However, if you drop the concentration level by a little, you get a lot more ore. The cost of raw uranium is only a very small part of the total cost, and therefore you can increase the cost of uranium by like 100x without noticably affecting the cost of nuclear electricity.

Also:
http://energyfromthorium.com/cubic-meter/
Uranium and thorium are an inexhaustible resource with breeder reactors.

And as the ThorCon guys say. So what if it only lasts 20 years. That's 20 years of no CO2 emissions, and 20 years more to figure out some other approach. Better than what we're doing now.

>> No.9685700

>>9685685
Also, in countries with reasonable regulations and that use good nuclear designs, i.e. South Korea, nuclear capital costs have been steadily decreasing over the last 3 decades. Nuclear is so expensive in the west because needless government policies and bad business decisions make it expensive. Actually, we could make nuclear electricity right now that is cost competitive with coal, and we should be doing so.
