This comic is still, and always has been, fucking retarded. For most of all everything, it's scientists going out and saying/doing retarded stuff with philosophers in the right.

Consider Hubert Dreyfus:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hubert_Dreyfus%27s_views_on_artificial_intelligence

He wrote many books attempting to tamp down people's retardedly optimistic, absurd beliefs that AI is going to be super powerful, tomorrow. He was mocked and scorned, yet proven right endlessly that scientists are absurd children who think their dumbass ideas are more than just a model.

And Dreyfus is hugely inspired by continental philosophy.

What a shit opinion.
Marvin Minsky did infinitely more than Dreyfus in terms of AI criticism.
You want to know what the difference between them is?
Minksy identified a specific limitation (perceptrons couldn't solve XOR) and proved it in a concrete way. And that information was used to transcend that limitation, which is why self-driving cars are able to work today.
This is how it should work, not a bunch of vague "muh knowledge" crying. Find something specific that's a limitation that can be addressed or shut the fuck up.

Natural philophers prior to the 15th century had a borderline religious reverence for Aristotle to the point of treating his views dogmatically. Neither skepticism nor quantitative function were held in high regard. It wasn't until about the 15th century did experimentation really take hold and prior it was based predominantly on observation. Call it science if you want but it is a far cry from the modern sense we use it and required philosophical backing. And I don't even know what your basis for the second claim is. No, you're wrong. Metaphysics/geometry is objectively the basis for science (see Aristotle/Archimedes)

However, Aristotle further expanded upon prior arithmetical concepts derived from Nicomachus/Plato, so you could say his metaphysics rested partially on the geometrical physics of Plato and party on arithmetic. Arithmetic is, of course, derived from geometry.

Therefore, all scientific understanding started with geometry.

That being said, what Newton did was, he wrote books on scientific understanding. And he also wrote books on mathematical understanding. So you could call him either.

I don't really call Archimedes a mathematician for writing The Sand Reckoner and using a device to measure stadia on the horizon, I call him a scientist. I would call Ptolemy a scientist as well for writing the Bell Curve and using the Armillary sphere.

Archimedes becomes a mathematician when he starts contemplating the things non-demonstrable (i.e. only ideally possible), like Archimedean spirals or cylinders/conoids/spheroids.

Hello brainlet. Apart from the fact that you pulled that shit about "continental/postmodern philosophy" out of your ass, "Social construct" does not have any derogatory meaning, it just means what the words imply: It's something constructed by society, or anything which would not exist if society did not exist.
Colors or sound? You don't need a society to experience those, ergo not a social construct
Concepts of "you" and "me"? If you were not part of a society, those things would meaningless, and it would be unlikely that you would ever think about them -> social construct
Language? Useless without society, would not exist -> social construct
Persistent information storage (e.g. cave paintings), philosophical musing? While there could be some use for you from both of them (e.g. marking where the best rivers to fish are), you would be unlikely to have time or creativity to invent them because you have to hunt or pick berries or whatever -> social construct.

It's as easy as that

>Proverbs 12:10 The righteous care for the needs of their animals
>Acts 10:9 The next day, while they were on their way and nearing the city, Peter went up to the roof terrace to pray at about noontime. 10 He was hungry and wished to eat, and while they were making preparations he fell into a trance. 11 He saw heaven opened and something resembling a large sheet coming down, lowered to the ground by its four corners. 12 In it were all the earth’s four-legged animals and reptiles and the birds of the sky. 13 A voice said to him, “Get up, Peter. Slaughter and eat.” 14 But Peter said, “Certainly not, sir. For never have I eaten anything profane and unclean.” 15 The voice spoke to him again, a second time, “What God has made clean, you are not to call profane.” 16 This happened three times, and then the object was taken up into the sky.
>Genesis 1:28 God blessed them and God said to them: Be fertile and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it.[g] Have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and all the living things that crawl on the earth. 29 [h]God also said: See, I give you every seed-bearing plant on all the earth and every tree that has seed-bearing fruit on it to be your food; 30 and to all the wild animals, all the birds of the air, and all the living creatures that crawl on the earth, I give all the green plants for food. And so it happened.
>Genesis 9:1 God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them: Be fertile and multiply and fill the earth. 2 Fear and dread of you shall come upon all the animals of the earth and all the birds of the air, upon all the creatures that move about on the ground and all the fishes of the sea; into your power they are delivered. 3 Any living creature that moves about shall be yours to eat; I give them all to you as I did the green plants.

If any retard is still having trouble with this one, none of the responses are correct, any ball entering the top resorvoir needs to displace the water as it enters and this is where the energy would be put in, building a seal like that is theoretically possible without the seal expending work opening/closing.

Also in this system the gates don't actually prevent water form leaking from top resorvoir to bottom, think about how the pressure between the two gates changes as it switches from having to gate closed and having the bottom gate closed. (water on top of body of water vs on bottom of a body of water)

You do realise philosophy is just opinions of reality on which you than can address with science. There is nothing true or false till proven. They are making up the best idea on how reality works and what reality is and from that science can do the scientific method.

(1) Applied Math for Economics/Business/Finance

There is a big difference between economics and finance.

Imo economics is more rewarding if you're into math, but has less real-world applications. It's a beautiful theoretical science though, and you basically get to just work with derivatives and integrals and vectors the whole time so if you like calculus, that's your bet.

It's depressing. I took a couple of philosophy classes for fun (geology major) and it was nothing at all like I expected. It's about rationalizing decisions, debating ethics, and trying to convince people what is right about your opinion.

WHY should someone give you money for research? WHY should we advance science? WHY should we we teach science in schools? WHY should we explore space?

All these are PHILOSOPHY and yet modern scientists berate it. I'm baffled.

I don't see why it wouldn't be 2, since that's the first glass that actually is fully closed (even though it looks like shit with a tube sticking from it). In the case of 7, you'd have to rely on water first filling glass 1 high enough for glass 3 to get the water, but that wouldn't occur until after 2 was already starting to get filled. As others already pointed out, 4,5 and 6 are all blocked off.

Of course, this all relies on the water flowing slowly enough that the pressure doesn't just force it into the 3rd glass immediately. If you were pouring a lot of water fast, 3 and 2 would begin to fill at the same time, which would result in it being 7 first (since the tube would slow water flow into 3 enough that it wouldn't fill 3)
