Im going to be taking a position as a high school math teacher tasked with teaching the AP calculus courses, helping run a math club and helping to set the entire high school math curriculum. Dont know how long Ill be there, I have a masters in math and am hoping to get an industry job soon.

In the meantime, what would you teach in calculus? What would you do in math club and how would you alter the curriculum? Ill be teaching the AP classes so I dont need to keep the material brainlet tier.

I was thinking of introducing either basic proofs and logic OR basic numerical methods in the math club depending on the students interests. Thoughts?

Just teach the class and actually take feedback from the students. Every math teacher I had in highschool was complete fucking garbage, and didn't even know half their shit. A moron teaching a moron isn't going to get a kid anywhere. But in your case your intelligent, so just try your best to make it liveable, and help the kids get good grades. Also, invite students to the math club who don't get good grades it will really help them out. (Also don't pull kids out to tell them they're failing and shit, that's just a fucking asshole move.) say something like "Hey, you're not doing so great but you have (insert one of their strengths here if they have any) and I would like you to come join the math club." Yeah I don't think it's right that students' first exposure to proofs is in first year undergrad. If anything it gives them a taste of real math, and helps them decide whether they might want to major in it when they actually get to uni. If they don't like it, but enjoy computations well hey they know they've got a career path as an engineer. Win-win.

Just demonstrate your enthusiasm for math, show interest in students, relate to modern times with math.... this will inspire some students to take more interest into the subject. Best teachers and professors I had, understood the students struggle with work, study, social responsibiliies, ect. And showed their enthusiasm as well as making topics interesting to the class. It may not show development in the students at first, but planting the seed of mathematics in them will eventually grow.

Also, if that's you in the picture, teenage boys will be quite distracted in "other things" to pay attention. My one math teacher had a banner in class " math is not a spectator sport", meaning you need to put the time to do the work and not just observe the work being done. So give them some interesting, and challenging homework. This might help the guys who can't think straight when in class.

It's empirical you teach them proofs imho. Maybe strip it down starting with basic set theory and propositional logic and work your way from there. Giving them a huge logical-mathematical background and specifically focusing on how to read, understand, structure and make proofs will be of great benefit to them, whatever they do later in life. Some of your students may be a little rusty or behind in algebra, and it's your responsibility as a teacher to understand everyone is coming from a slightly different background.
