What is /sci/s pen of choice for taking notes (proven to improve cognitive ability)?

For me, it's the Zebra-Z1.

can’t believe no one has mentioned the G2 in .5 or .7mm depending on subject. I prefer .7 for general hum/social sci note taking and .5 for anything quant

everyone I know who has a favorite pen chooses this one (among people with significantly above average IQ at a top US university) so I’m not saying there’s a correct answer or anything but you choose a different pen at your own peril

mine definitely do not. I see this issue with uni-ball which is why I avoid those even though they are comfortable to write with

the G2 actually has a very reasonable dwell, if you leave the ball point on a page you will not have a ludicrous puddle of ink. I think you may be confusing the G2 with some other more smear-prone gel pens

I don't use them for the majority of my work because I don't have that many compared to other colors, I just like green. I did check online to see if they sell the green in bulk and it seems they do, so I might pick a pack up at some point.

Normally when I'm taking notes I switch between colors to clearly and quickly tell what notes are on a given page because I keep notes for multiple subjects in the same notebook. Other than that, all I want is something to write with that works, doesn't smear too much, doesn't cause handpain with prolonged writing, and produces text that's easy to read.

Some believe that writing on a yellow pad is easier to read than writing on a white pad. But Israel Abramov, a professor of psychology at Brooklyn College and a specialist in color vision, dismisses the theory. Readability, he says, is more a matter of contrast—how the color of the ink interacts with the color of the paper—than of the paper color alone. The highest contrast scenario is black ink on white paper, though Abramov concedes that in specific conditions, yellow paper might be preferable in terms of readability. "If the light is too intense, the paper can be glaring, and yellow cuts down the glare," he said. Abramov prefers a psychological to a physiological explanation for yellow's predominance. "White paper that sits around starts to look yellow and old," he said. "I heard of one professor who used yellow paper for his lecture notes because he didn't want his students to know how old the notes were." Legal pad enthusiasts do seem to have a psychological connection to their writing tablets. Philip Moustakis, a mid-level associate at the New York firm of Curtis, Mallet-Prevost, Colt & Mosle, uses one legal pad per case, and prefers yellow over white pads and a faint, as opposed to a dark, rule. "The darker lines intrude upon my thinking—they're yelling back at you," he explained. "You want a more subtle line."...

for my part, I have exceptional vision (20/15 uncorrected) which often means that in especially bright rooms or on a computer screen, too bright white doesn’t increase readability and just strains my eyes. I find that I can stare at my notes on a yellow page and my eyes are more relaxed, I can look for longer and think more clearly.

I also prefer to read older books on yellowed paper, and I like the sepia or graphite reader themes in some ebook readers or websites. It’s a matter of preference in the end, I don’t think a yellow legal pad is a brain hack, I just know it works for me and wanted to share :)
