Genes are a messy spaghetti of signals. The ones for light skin also cause blond hair if a couple other ones are right. There may also have been a lot of sexual selection going on.

I'm not sure if hunter-gatherers were capable of thinking to cut all of their hair off so as to blend in with the landscape to have an easier time hunting, and then it'd be hard to maintain.

I don't have enough information to say that it's more or less than cross-fire, but I think it's still strange that you get enough of a schism from northern and southern Europe for blonde hair to dominate in the North and be rare in the South (Italy).

Blonde hair is just a genetic mutation that proliferated due to sexual selection. It has nothing to do with snow or cold climates since Melanesians have their own blonde mutation gene (independent of Europeans) as well and are located in Oceania within the south hemisphere.

What's strange to me is that it would grow to dominate from an off-shoot and not be totally repressed by other genetics. I can't say that Blonde hair is naturally attractive.

The Melanesians mutated blonde hair, but it came to dominate because of a small island populace.

I think it mutated at a faster rate in European populaces due to a lack of melanin in the first place.
