After a few months i finally understand why subtracting a negative is the same as adding a positive.

+4 + +2 = 6

-4 + -2 = -6

-4 - +2 = -6

therefore +4 - -2 must = 6

Which means - - corresponds to + +

Am i a genius?

Isn't this stuff you learn in the second grade?
Yes, you're a genius OP

Not sure if b8 but I'll contribute
No. Just think of it this way. If you keep subtracting numbers closer to 0, you will subtract by less and less.
When you subtract by 0, you subtract by nothing. The next logical step is to do the opposite.
At least, that's how I thought about it in 5th grade.

Great OP now explain why a negative times a negative is a positive

Why do people who are this bad at math even bother coming here?

It's a consequence of the distributive property

-1 * 2 + -1 * -2 = -1(+2 + -2) = -1*(0) = 0

if we distribute -1 to the terms inside the parenthesis we get -2 for the first term.

in order for the distributive property to remain consistent -2 + n has to = 0

in order for that to be true -1*-2 has to = 2

so a negative times a negative is positive.

ok now why does x^-1 = 1/x?

x*x -1 times
x*x^1= x^1*x^1=x^x
x^x^0= x*^1*x^0 =x^1
x^x=x^1*x^-1 =?
x^1 = x = x
x^0 = 1 = x/x
x^-1= 1/x = x^0/x^1 multiply by conjugate = 1/x

a^0 = 1 because any faction a/b where a = b and b != 0 equals 1.

a^4 = a*a*a*a

a^1 = a

a*a*a*a/a = a^3 after reducing

if we divide two numbers with the same base raised to an exponent we can subtract the denominators exponent from the numerator so we have a^4/a^1 = a^(4-1)

therefore a^n/a^n = a^(n-n) = a^0

a^n= a^n

so a^n/a^n = 1 and a^n/a^n = a^0

so a^0 = 1

a^-1 = a^(0-1) and that is equal to a^0/a^1 which is equal to

1/a^1

so a^-1 = 1/a

>Which means - - corresponds to + +
Yes, that is quite correct.

>Am i a genius?
I wouldn't go that far. But you are building real mathematical insight here: understanding the pattern, and realizing why a particular open question can only possibly work out one way because of it.

That is what true mathematical understanding looks like. Now go work on more of it and feel more badass again :)

Nobody ever talks about anything interesting math-wise

You could think of it as finding the distance of two numbers

Ex. 5 in the positive axis (-) a number in the negative axis (-3) the distance between the two 5-(-3) is 8 therefore 5-(-3)=8
