Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering should not be listed together in the first place. They are completely different (to be clear: Civil < Mech).
The people who made that chart are either not engineers or a group of ChemE/EE. circlejerk.

>> No.9541937

I never seen people make fun of ME's. ME is the broadest and essentially the base engineering major because you can cross into all other engineering programs easily. Like you can become a petroleum engineer if you have a background in PE (obviously) or ChemE or ME. ME is the safest engineering major to choose in terms of job outlook because you can pivot. Civil Engineers do get shit on but only because their curriculum is the easiest engineering curriculum because they deal with stuff that doesn't move. Also Civil is getting infested with women now and anything seen with women in it loses prestige.

Applied Physics and Production Engineering double major guy here.

I was passing all the mathematical parts of mechanical engineering courses thanks to the maths I learned in Physics. I was passing all the other theory parts thanks to common knowledge. Labs were fun to have though. I had mechanical engineering courses to have a double degree in mechanical engineering but it turned out that wasn't enough so they gave me production one.

Mechanical engineering is useful and shit just as any other. We are living in such a time that no matter which STEM field you are in, as long as you have very good understanding of maths, programming and practical parts of physics, you can easily get a job in most of the STEM fields.

software developer

Are you really this retarded? SE is a meme degree. CS majors take software engineering and software development jobs, not SE majors. A school offering an SE major is a joke for the most part. No one takes it seriously and a CS degree is always better. Even read the actual BLS part on how to become a software developer and it says "Software developers usually have a bachelor’s degree in computer science and strong computer programming skills." Go read that now you retard.

>payscale computer programmer
To add icing on the cake and remove all doubt that you really are mentally retarded you link to pay for computer programmers. A CS major is not a code monkey you drooling retard. IT is closer to being a code monkey but IT is usually not even good enough to be that as an IT major usually has an extremely shallow programming background. What you're defending, IT, is at the level of a pajeet.

Tell me, where you dropped on the head as a child or where you just born retarded? How dumb do you have to be to fall for /sci/ memes without even taking the time to research what you are discussing? BLS is the official government website that compiles data for employment in the US. As BLS has stated a computer science degree is most often then not necessary for the job. The website you linked is about pay for computer programmers which is distinct from software development/engineering. A CS major can become a programmer just like they can become a sysAdmin but they can also become a software developer and much more. Basically a CS major is much better then IT.

Its the official government website with compiled statistics. The pay is the average but it really depends on where you live. Most of these jobs are in California where the cost of living is high already. If you click on state and area data the stats are further broken down by state. It even has links to other websites that have local stats to give you an idea of how the pay is like in your area.

All other statistic websites don't say otherwise but they rather narrow it down based on area or on self reporting. The problem with this is not everyone reports their salary and what the government defines as "software development" might not be what they define as that. For example software engineering is often separated as different in other statistics but the government groups software engineering within software development. Why? I don't fucking know. Likewise some software engineering jobs might be grouped within computer programming for who knows why. These stats also don't say anything about experience so starting salaries are always going to be lower. Starting salaries are often in the $60,000 -65,000 range but it varies by area. LA for example has starting salaries around 85,000. Realistically these stats are good for knowing which field has plenty of employment not so much for what you'll be making but the average pay is a good indicator of which field pays more.

>That's because some unis offers shit degrees titled CS. Its a problem as the field isn't fully well defined. That's not surprising but your ignorance on the field is. Not all states have this problem, California universities have done a geat job in giving proper degrees for the field.

CS courses everywhere are a joke. Some are just more of a joke than others but the fact remains that you guys don't learn a 1/3 of the content that's covered in other STEM programs at even the best of school. Sure you're better than no name schools that relabel IT as CS degrees, but that's like a retard with an IQ of 70 being proud he isn't a retard with an IQ of 60....

How can you say its a joke when you've never actually studied it? Why do you feel the need to try and prove it when you're clearly painfully ignorant on the field? Can you not see how insecure you look?

You literally seep with insecurity. I don't even know why. Maybe its jealousy that CS majors have better job prospects or better pay but either way your need to try and prove your false sense of superiority just makes you look pathetic. The field is still new and with information technology branching off its become harder to define with some universities giving easier information technology degrees labeled as CS. The accredited bodies have attempted to prevent this by trying to further define each discipline.

Yet instead of looking at the obvious your sense of inferiority makes you lash out at CS to try and prove something. CS is not superior to other majors nor is it inferior, its simply different. Your sense of inferiority is downright pathetic but you're not wrong in feeling inferior, you are inferior. Not because of your major or whatever but the person you are itself is inferior. Why do you keep insisting that "I've never studied CS"? I wasted my time taking CS courses because CS majors (just like you) swore that their stuff was really mathematical and deep only to find shallow glacial courses with the other cs students dying on the simplest concepts. I first thought it might be my school (which was supposedly highly ranked for cs) that was the problem... But after comparing the syllabi at other famous schools, they were mostly the same content wise, used the same books, and often even had identical assignments/projects in some courses. The only schools that I have been able to find that offer cs done right are rare European ones.

>swore that their stuff was really mathematical and deep only to find shallow glacial courses

That whole post was cringe inducing but this part especially so. So you're a math autist that thinks if you don't waste your time studying a bunch of useless theoritical math classes then you're not in a "real major". I can see the autism as you lack the self awereness to tell how retarded you sound. CS is different from math, there's no comparison. Reading the rest of your post it looks like you took an intro class and assummed the rest of the major was like it. Its retarded reasoning but seeing as how you where dumb enough to waste your time on a study that has little to no practical use in the real world you clearly don't make the best decisions.

The entry classes for CS are easy you brainlet but as the major continues it gets tougher. Probably easier then EE but definitely harder than math. I'm not saying math is easier to understand but the coursework is far lighter then CS, engineering, and science majors. A math major rarely needs to worry about finishing a lab and the coursework is far easier then CS where labs and projects are constantly due throughout the semester. Every math major I've talked to has admitted they weren't good enough for CS/engineering/science or simply chose math because it was the easiest major. Sure the material might be more difficult to understand then other majors but difficulty is no issue when the coursework is far lighter with no worry of finishing a project or two due in a couple days. I do respect math but claiming its somehow better then any other major when their are distinct differences shows how ignorant you are.

When you become a math teacher and a student tells you they want to major in engineering or CS try not to sperg out at them cause you know they'll make more thsn you in a couple years.

>> No.9544676

Engineering, science and CS may indeed require more work than Math, but it's no way that they are harder material wise. Also pure Math professors are the most autistic people on the plant, sometimes they make tests problem so difficult that Einstein may have problem with and no one can fucking complain. Because CS majors, CS majors with math minors, and CS/math double majors always pick the easiest math courses that are offered so of course you would run into the 2nd class math students aiming at becoming hs math teachers and actuaries. You may as well be judging physics majors by the dumb asses who watch big bang theory and take intro to astro.

I'd never say otherwise but the workload is a huge factor in the difficulty of each major. While math may be harder material wise then most other majors the workload is nothing compared to other STEM majors. In that sense its a lot easier.

>While other majors you can get a good grade as long you do the minimum required effort.
Right here you are assuming only math professors are autistically difficult. I've had CS professors that expect everything done just the way you want it and just one mistake like a missed comment can get you a 0 for the whole assignment. This is really anecdotal so no point in talking about for difficulty of each major.

My claim was very hyperbolic and I have met math majors who simply study it because they love the field but the people who had doubts about what to study did pick it because it was far easier then other majors in terms of workload. Also no reason to bash the math teachers and actuaries. At least they had the foresight to realize they should try and get a job out of it. People who don't do math don't care for abstract theoretical math as that stuff is pretty useless for us. Depending on what you do after, it might even be useless for you eventually. But if you like it then that's great just try not to shove it unto everyone else as if we should care for it.

It's a use of applied math, but most likely the most important use of applied math in our current society. Mathematicians could likely produce the models, sure, but they wouldn't be able to apply the knowledge and take action with it. That takes years of studying what trends exist and what usually happens with those trends. In the case of the macro economy, economists have to understand policy, as well. They don't just produce their regression model and say here it is. They have to be able to present it in a way that is understandable to policy makers.

If you think a mathematician could easily replace the role of an economist, you have very little knowledge of economics. It's like thinking a psychologist could easily be the president since they understand how people think.

Any piece of knowledge can be obtained easily through cheap, simple means in 2018. The only reason one should pay to attend college in the modern world is,

1) the content is so hard you desperately need a real life teacher with real life office hours and real life homework/test obligations in order to understand it, or

2) you want to signal to employers that not only did you learn the content, but that you succeeded in achieving high grades in it from an accredited institution. So the content had better be hard, otherwise if you're just taking easy classes where everyone is getting As, your good grades are signaling jack shit to employers.

In either case, it's crucial that the content you choose is actually difficult. Otherwise just sit home and learn it without paying $20K+ a year.

So the tier list of college majors can be sorted by difficulty. So here's your objectively correct tier list, sorted from worst to best :

>> No.9545489

>>9545463

bullshit. the only reason you need a college degree is if you're in a field where a degree is required for a license to practice (like law or medicine) or you need lab hours in order to learn how to use equipment (physics or bio). nothing is "too hard to learn alone", unless you're a brainlet

>> No.9545504

>>9545489
>is if you're in a field where a degree is required for a license to practice

Yes.... this would just be legally enforced signaling to employers. A subset of reason 1). There are other people that get degrees because, while it is technically legal to get a job in the field without a degree, it's much easier to get a job if you can show employers that you do have a degree.

>nothing is "too hard to learn alone", unless you're a brainlet

LOL, okay, so you're telling me that by virtue of your big brain and access to OCW, you could learn quantum informatics + the modern forefront of the developments in the computational complexity zoo, by yourself, no advice needed? And I'm not talking "learn" in the sense of "I can brag on Facebook and shitpost on /sci/", I'm talking "learn" as in, "I know enough to properly make academic contributions in this field in the form of peer-reviewed papers".

You have to then explain why no one does that, then, in pure math. Besides few key examples like Ramunajan and Galois, there are very few examples in history of people who made major contributions to mathematics without any institutional aid or formal learning.

This is especially true these days, when all work in maths is so insanely specialized and niche and you have to have an incredibly strong grasp of highly technical, terse content in order to really push the field forward even an inch.

You just have to be able to talk to professors and share with classmates IRL in order to excel in that stuff. Very few people can get through introductory real analysis on their own with no help, let alone, say, enough abstract algebra to make real headway in solving problems in category theory.

And can you blame them? I mean, have you tried reading through Baby Rudin by yourself with no help? Let alone Papa Rudin.

I feel like you're coming from this background where any 17 year old can spin up a Node.js server and tear through an online book on JavaScript in a weekend to put together an impressive website for his family to fawn at and then get a job at some startup in 7 months. Or maybe you're talking about another field with a similar trajectory, like, I dunno, NEETs mastering philosophy online thanks to plato.stanford.edu.

But this brave new information age isn't so charitable to all fields, and mathematics is one of those fields where the content is too terse and there's just so many prerequisites of knowledge you need to get a hold of before you make any real contribution. There's really not that many Will Huntings out there that can master all that without the guidance of a professor.

also, the argument "why aren't people doing it" is null. we don't live in an age where people can afford to spend hours upon hours studying something at this level for fun. this can only be done by relatively rich people, who also happen to take an insane interest in this field. but those same people can afford college, so in the real world there is no drive for someone to attempt this. however, that doesn't make it impossible. it's like saying people can't eat their own shit because "if they can, why aren't they doing it?"

1) As far as I know, the only Engineering branchs that could rival ME in terms of difficulty, are Chemical Engineering or Electrical Engineering.

2) In terms of curriculum, a Mechanical Engineer will learn circuits courses but an Electronic/Electrical Engineer will never learn fluid mechanics courses. A Mechanical Engineer can work on a reactor design but a Chemical Engineer will never work on an Internal combustion engine. Get my point?

3) ME is also the broadest of all Engineering types, intellectually-wise. You could have a Mechanical Engineering working on Nuclear Power, on Biomaterials, on robotics or any type of weaponry. And this is just If the Mechanical Engineer is an average well-learned individual: If he is also intelligent and competent in Physics or Programming, the possibilities are endless. Although some fields are more worthy according to someones scale, no amount of knowledge is unworthy. Many concepts and ideas can be integrated into other, more formal knowledge structures. I've learned quite a lot from theory of art and design and I keep using it in my job as an Engineer.

Why make hierarchies of knowledge when any knowledge can be used to profoundly impact your life? I'll better die a polymath than a bitter expert, full of an unfounded sense of self worth. Have a nice day.

Ironically Gender Studies have one of highest employment rates right now. Higher than STEM

(1) Due to diversity hiring.

(2) Working in Human resources departments hiring even more feminists and gay people.

(3) Working Government Public Service as social workers (read as Social Justice Warriors), Specially in cucked Governments as Canada, Sweden or California,

(4) In Colleges and Universities as Gender Studies professors.

Ironically, most jobs in CS (IT) will be taken by bots/AI. Of course there will be people working with AI, but overall most people falling to the CS meme will end up unemployed.

>> No.9548855

I'm a senior Civil Engineer and I'm going back to college soon. I'm between CS and Psychology.
I like them both, but in terms of employability I don't think CS will be a viable carreer in 4~5 years, unless I work with AI...and I'll also be far behind the oversaturated market.
I do think that psychology will be viable in many of its fields though.

This scenario (however unlikely) would only be possible long after we're deceased.

Jesus /sci/ really gets to people.

Where is the logic in even considering psychology (possibly one of the most saturated degree choice) over CS which is pretty saturated, but generally high paying and in high demand.

Not that guy, but is obvious why you would choose a MechE over a ChemE to work on an ICE (or any kind of engine/machine).

Regarding your second question: ChemE is more related to the making of new materials, pharmaceuticals, design and construction of labs, petrochemicals, food processing, polymers, etc.
It has NOTHING to do with ME. The only thing in which they may be related is that ChemE may create the materials that MechE will work with, to then MechE create the machinery, tools or devices that all the other Engineerings will work with (including ChemE).

>> No.9550883

>>9550859
Don't MechE curriculum's already focus heavily on Materials Sciences anyways? At least in my school there's plenty of masters programs that do.

>> No.9550898

>>9550883
Absolutely, yes. There are only 3 engineering branches that deal with Materials Science: Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering. Which is why I said on my post ( >>9545908 ) that the only branches that could rival ME in terms of difficulty is ChemE or EE.

ME has its downsides: some people say it is too versatile and you finish up being a "jack of all trades" instead of an "ace of one". I don't know, I think it depends on the kind of person you are and in what you specialize in.
As always, research like crazy before making such a decision of switching careers. Look at the pros and cons of MechE, try to ask people studying it, read forums, etc. Good luck.
