Because what is traditionally defined as magic does nothing. Spells don't do shit. Usually any results are conscience or number games. Someone casts a death spell and that person's grandparent dies. The caster goes "Oh the spell worked, I just messed up and pointed it at the wrong person." Or someone casts a spell to hurt someone. The person cursed gets hurt a several months later. "Oh the spell worked!"

It's just bullshit. Talking to serious people who practice magic they admit that they're nothing but ritualized prayers.
