So /sci/, was is the explanation for the Klingons changing so dramatically in such a short span of time?

I originally though maybe I should just pretend TOS Klingons didn't look different, but then Worf directly acknowledges it in the DS9 episode where they go back in time and are on Kirk's ship.

So then I thought maybe they went through some fast evolution, BUT, there is a Next Gen episode in which they encounter Klingons that had been frozen since before the alliance from back when Kirk was captain and they looked like the new klingons.

Better makeup artists and joke acknowledging that.

Canonically, the Klingons tried creating Augments like Khan, but just ended up creating a virus that carried human DNA, causing Klingons with smooth foreheads to be born.
Thus, the Klingon insult "Your mother has a smooth forehead".

Thats stupid. Why not just make it a simple retcon.

"Yeah, they always looked like that, but we just didn't have the makeup to show it in the original series"
