I’ve recently really wanted to get into advanced chemistry but I don’t know if it’s worth it

Chemistry is really broad. Synthetic organic chemistry is nothing like studying physical chemistry (the other half of which is chemical physics) is nothing like studying analytical techniques or inorganic chemistry or computational chemistry (essentially programming/csci).

Anything is respectable if you get good enough at it.

I have a master's degree in chemisty with hons. My experience with it was you spend years learnning a ton of theory and practising lab skills with well proven reactions that always work, then you try and do some real research and finds out that almost none of what you learned is useful, hardly any reactions from the literature work and you are basically doing trial and error to find anything new and then back rationalizing everything that happened to theory which didn't help you.
