My thinking was that no small country can really threaten the US or Russia with their thousands of nukes each. So how expensive would a doomsday weapon be? How much cobalt (or gold, or sodium) would be needed and how many (stationary) nuclear devices in order to irradiate the entire planet?

It can't be anywhere as expensive as the trillions the US/Russia spent on their nuclear arsenals.

It seems that drilling a hole would let the gasses vent (C02) without the explosion (dust). So instead of ice age, I would think the ice caps would melt, more storms, more rain, and sea levels rise about 100 meters (max).

I came up with a better idea. If cold fusion is real then it might be possible to fuse hydrogen in a palladium or nickel matrix at low temperatures. We could make self replicating nano machines that fuse hydrogen (to helium) for power. They could cleave the hydrogen from water. Eventually, as they replicate, they would destroy ALL water on earth, leaving behind a hyper dense atmosphere of almost pure oxygen.

Before we all die of thirst we can watch the world burn in a global firestorm.

Unless this isn't the version I remember, it does this:

>Designed to travel at said stupid speeds as close to the ground as possible, flattening structures with its own shockwaves while also spewing radiation
>Fuel will keep it going for a very long time, enough to let it attack a significant number of cities without the warheads
A few of these could easily stop international progress, even if the radiation isn't enough for your doomsday needs.

My next idea would only work for America and Russia: Put ALL your nuclear waste in ONE giant pile on top of a single really big nuke.

Maybe having all these "spent fuel rod pools" all over the place are actually, doomsday weapons in disguise. If EVERY single pool dried up and caught on fire (because everyone was dead in that country), how fucked would the whole planet be?

I looked it up and here's an old map. If everyone in North America died (for any reason) eventually every one of these sites would burn and spew radiation across the earth. I would bet Russia is nearly the same.

Nah it pretty vulnerable to surface to air missiles and is capable of being destroyed by any fighter jet with look down /shoot down radar capability. It only goes Mach 3 which makes interception tricky but doable if you know what you'e doing.
