The physicist would beat the mathematician, because only somebody who made the poor life decision of becoming a physicist would both to memorise mathematics, whereas a mathematician would preserve their brainpower for more important tasks.

What kind of problem? Does it have a formula? If so would it have been formula the enginer would have learned as opposed the physicist? Is the formula given or must it be remembered/ figured out through logic? Is it a simole question of math, or a question of theory? There are a lot of variables that go into this, none of which you considered.
