So I was trying to find the projection of the first quadrant of the unit circle onto the line 1-x. Is my reasoning/answer correct?

The problem I am trying to solve is to show that the suspension of the unit n-sphere is homeomorphic to the n+1-sphere, [math]\Sigma S^n\cong S^{n+1}[/math], where [math]\Sigma X = X\times[-1,1]/\sim[/math], where [math]\sim[/math] is the relation [math](x,-1)\sim(x',-1)[/math] and [math](x,1)\sim(x',-1)[/math].

>Is my reasoning/answer correct?
The "unit circle" is not well-defined, so no.

>> No.9418186

>>9418166
That looks a bit hard, imo. You could do it like this: First define a function [math]S^n\times[-1, 1] \to S^{n+1}[/math] by [math](x, t) \mapsto (\sqrt{1-t^2}x, t)[/math], which you will show is well defined, continuous and surjective. Then you will define a relation [math]R_f[/math] by [math](x, t)R_f(y, s) \Leftrightarrow f(x, t)=f(y, s)[/math] which you will show to be the same as [math]\sim[/math]. Finally, since spheres and closed intervals are compact, so is their product, and therefore the function defined above is closed (because compact sets are closed in Hausdorff spaces and spheres are Hausdorff). There is a result saying that if you have a continuous and open or closed surjection [math]g\colon X\to Y[/math] and define [math]R_g[/math] like above, then there is a homeomorphism [math]X/R_g \to Y[/math] given by [math][x]\mapsto g(x)[/math]. You will then have a chain of homeomorphisms [math]S^n\times [-1, 1]/R_f = S^n\times [-1, 1]/\sim \approx S^{n+1}[/math], from which the claim follows.

>> No.9418240

>>9418186
Thanks you're right - there is an easier result that skips the last steps which you may have overlooked: a bijective continuous map from a compact space to a Hausdorff space is bicontinuous, and the form of the relation automatically makes it an injective map so we're done.

I didn't overlook them, I left the gaps for you to fill. You can use the same method to show that the cone of an sphere is homeomorphic to a closed disk, or that shrinking the boundary of a closed disk gives you a sphere, etc. Try to do those if you feel like it.

No problem, the book really is quite nice, even without knowledge of the underlying mathematics the art is simply amazing and so detailed and vivid that it makes you especially interested in understanding what's really going on. It really is a treat to come back to this book after learning more algebraic topology, for me it felt like I finally got into this secret club that I could only catch glimpses of, like a whole new world had opened up. It also just helps give a new sense of intuition and thinking about these topics as now there is some sort of geometric representation of what you're thinking about. I've actually considered trying to replicate this type of art for other fields of math, since most fields have at least some connection to geometry, and even if they didn't there should be a way of imagining them in an analogous fashion.

I'm having another brainlet moment in what should be a simple "check".

Background info: Let [math]f:A_\ast\to B_\ast[/math] be a chain map of abelian groups. The induced map [math]f_\ast:H_n(A)\to H_n(B)[/math] is defined by setting [math]f_\ast([\sigma]):=[f_n(\sigma)][/math]. Question: Check that it is well defined: Let [math]\sigma\in A_n[/math].

[eqn][\sigma]=[\sigma']\iff \exists \tau\in A_{n+1}:\sigma-\sigma'=\partial^A_{n+1}(\tau) \implies f_\ast([\sigma])=[f_n(\sigma)]=[f_n(\partial^A_{n+1}(\tau)+\sigma')]
[/eqn]

Now what is left to show is that [math]f_n\circ\partial^A_{n+1}(\tau)=0[/math]. We can use the identity [math]f_n\circ\partial^A_{n+1}(\tau)=\partial^B_{n+1}\circ f_{n+1}(\tau)[/math], but I don't know why this identity implies the latter term is [math]0[/math].

Generally given an affine scheme SpecR, the deformation Spec(R[x]/<x^n>) contains information about functions on SpecR along with their first (n-1)-derivatives.

So possibly a way to consider fractional derivatives, is to consider fractional polynomials.

Thus maybe we want to consider x^a, for non-integer a, as a formal power series. And then look at Spec(R[[x]]/<x^a>), or more likely Spf(R[[x]]<x^a>) .

Three Puzzles on Mathematics, Computation, and Games
Gil Kalai
https://arxiv.org/pdf/1801.02602.pdf
>In this lecture I will talk about three mathematical puzzles involving mathematics and computation that have preoccupied me over the years. The first puzzle is to understand the amazing success of the simplex algorithm for linear programming. The second puzzle is about errors made when votes are counted during elections. The third puzzle is: are quantum computers possible?

>...the first doubts about the model were raised, quantum systems are of a “noisy” and unstable nature. Peter Shor himself found a key to a possible solution to the problem of “noise”: quantum error-correcting codes and quantum fault-tolerance. In the mid-1990s, three groups of researchers showed that “noisy” quantum computers still make it possible to perform all miracles of universal quantum computing, as long as engineers succeeded in lowering the noise level below a certain threshold.

>A widespread opinion is that the construction of quantum computers is possible, that the remaining challenge is essentially of an engineering nature, and that such computers will be built in the coming decades. Moreover, people expect to build in the next few years quantum codes of the quality required for quantum fault-tolerance, and to demonstrate the concept of ”quantum computational supremacy” on quantum computers with 50 qubits. My position is that it will not be possible to construct quantum codes that are required for quantum computation, nor will it be possible to demonstrate quantum computational superiority in other quantum systems. My analysis is based on the same model of noise that led researchers in the 1990s to optimism about quantum computation, it points to the need for different analyses on different scales, and it shows that noisy quantum computers in the small scale (a few dozen qubits) express such a primitive computational power that it will not allow the creation of quantum codes that are required as building blocks for quantum computers on a higher scale.

Oh he meant one that can sustain stable qubits and is just studying the effects of decoherence on quantum algos. Thogh many theoretical models using non-Abelian anyons and topological excitations as qubits has been proposed, and some are pretty close to actual being implemented in QC. It wouldn't be far-fetched at all to think that decoherence-free QC can be constructed sometime down the line.

Now that I think about it, x^a is defined as the formal series exp(a*log(x)), so this would really only work if the ring A is an extension of the rationals.

So this might be interesting if you want A to be a number field or the complex numbers. But in general cases it doesn't make sense.

Well, to begin with, you should say precisely what the term means. Okay, if you don't, at least someone should. Putting an adjective in front of a noun does not in itself make a mathematical concept. Cantor declared that an `infinite set' is a set which is not finite. Surely that is unsatisfactory, as Cantor no doubt suspected himself. It's like declaring that an `all-seeing Leprechaun' is a Leprechaun which can see everything. Or an `unstoppable mouse' is a mouse which cannot be stopped. These grammatical constructions do not create concepts, except perhaps in a literary or poetic sense. It is not clear that there are any sets that are not finite, just as it is not clear that there are any Leprechauns which can see everything, or that there are mice that cannot be stopped. Certainly in science there is no reason to suppose that `infinite sets' exist. Are there an infinite number of quarks or electrons in the universe? If physicists had to hazard a guess, I am confident the majority would say: No. But even if there were an infinite number of electrons, it is unreasonable to suppose that you can get an infinite number of them all together as a single `data object'.

I don't know what finite generation has to do with it, just show that there exists a 1 element subset that is linearly independent, and that any subset with more than 1 element is linearly dependent.

well i forgot to mention, but S is taken to be a basis, ie every element q in Q can be written as a Z-linear sum of elements in S. So in particular if rankQ=1, then S has one element, so that every element in Q can be written as q times an integer.

It need not span [math]\mathbb{Q}[/math] though, which it clearly can't do anyway.

What are you confused by? Not every linearly independent subset is a basis, it's fairly clear in those notes since being a basis requires an extra condition. Your original question only asked for linearly indepdent.

This isn't a matter of convergence. As a formal power series there is no way to make sense of x^a.

If (a_0 + a_1*x+...)^2=x then expand the left side and compare coefficients in degree 0 and 1.

Yes. Differentiate both sides and get an ODE [math]f' - kf = 0[/math] and by the existence and uniqueness of solutions [math]e^{x/k}[/math] is the unique solution (up to a constant factor).

Modern "geometry" is developed in a setting where one can easily prove the principle of non-contradiction. Anything else like "Tarski's axioms" aren't really a part of mathematics.
