So i'm a freshmen majoring in Bio. I've learned that the frontal part of the lobe is responsible for deep cognitive thought (im sure its more complex than that but this is just in a nutshell). Anyways, this got me thinking about something. Could you say that the frontal lobe contains your personality? Following this, if you agree, would you also agree that a lobotomy is then a form of execution? I mean after the procedure is done, exactly what is left of you?

The results of frontal lobe injuries vary wildly.
Doesn't usually reduce you to a horror movie zombie, but definitely alters personality.

Gage lived, was able to function, hold a job, which means he still had desires and motivations for which he needed money.
So, not dead. Changed, yes.

The picture reminds me of a freak accident.
Guy playing with a toy arrow was shot right up the nose. Brain isn't armored in that direction.
He lost the ability to form new long-term memories. His personality was apparently unchanged and he could remember everything before the accident, but the accident was "always" just hours old. If you interviewed him, he wouldn't know you a few hours later.

RadioLab covered a similar case. Girl suffered brain damage from a virus. She coped, kept a diary, took extensive notes and photographs, went through college and graduated with a degree. She sounded happy and competent but was well aware that she she'd forget you in a few hours. Shown movies of an earlier meeting, she didn't deny that it had happened, but it was like watching a film about another person.

This. There are records of people that new Gage, and most (if not all?) said he became a lot less kind and less social after the accident. It definitely changed who he was, but was still a functioning member of society.

something about the amygdala housing emotional processing and personality
there's a disease caused by damage to the amygdala that causes a person to suspect everyone of being a "clone", not the real person
scary stuff meng

That sounds really interesting m8, I'm going to check that out. Diseases that change the way the brain operates are so interesting.

I had some level of brain damage. time dilation. my frontal lobe was hardly functioning. was like being stuck in the fifth dimension. everything was so far

I often shake my head rapidly to fix my hair sometimes. Is my brain rattling around each time I do this? and is this doing cumulative damage to my brain?

Yes it's probably sloshing around quite a bit, but for as long as you're plenty hydrated it shouldn't damage anything. Unless it actually causes headache in which case i'd recommend using a fucking hairdryer like a normal person.

Brain damage usually only occurs from a sudden fast and violent snap that squashes your brain with such a force it causes blunt trauma and actually concusses your brain. Hence concussion -> brain damage. Brains are remarkably soft and fragile.
