For one, programming is an incredibly degrading job that offers 0 job security and is the vocation most plagued by ageism by a far margin. You are not respected at any normal company. Every day, some Alpha who probably does nothing at his job except get his secretary to suck his dick in his corner office cucks you into doing random bitch work, and then yells at you when it's not done by the deadline despite it being impossible to complete the work requested. Not only that, the code rarely works, your co-workers are Indians brought in by Tata Consultancy who will replace you for half the salary and you have to train them to get your $500 severence, and the work never, ever ends. You pollute your body with the caffeinenated jew, deprive it of sleep, and let it rot while you sit the majority of the day, neglecting any healthy exercise, social interaction or life goal attainment.

The point is that popular portrayal plays a huge part in what careers women choose.

Women are told by sitcoms, magazines and social media that CS is for dorks. Shows like TBBT portray scientists as ugly, unsociable, and asexual. Women do not want to be this or be around it. But this portrayal is cliched and stereotypical.

The point is that media which claims to be helping is hurting more than anything. The PR guys for TBBT will claim that they are popularizing science, when in fact they're damaging it's portrayal

The same can be said for the countless books, news segments, blogs etc. that are endlessly telling women how oppressed they will be in a tech job. All this "lean in" bullshit just makes a business/scientific career seem exhausting, unnatural, and unrewarding for a woman. Two days ago I was in an airport where CNN was blasting on TV's and some bimbo who "did an internship in Silicon Valley" said "My best advice for girls is change your name, because if men in Silicon Valley see a woman's name on an email, they ignore it." And then the two women talking went on to say how they want to promote women in STEM and want things to change, as if this doom and gloom bullshit is helping. It's a massive conflict of interest, b/c the people who claim to be helping this issue by highlighting it are the ones who profit off of it's existence

Basically, the best advice for incorporating women into tech jobs is just to not make a big deal about it. Stop all this "YOU'RE A WOMAN WE NEED YOU" bullshit. Stop all the congratulating and pointing it out. Fire sexism when you see it, but otherwise just get to work and be encouraging and decent to everyone.
