I don't think it's underrated at all. Everyone in geology adores it.

ecology/earth system science for numerous reasons.
Most importantly, the better we understand how the living world works, the better prospects we have of surviving ever worsening biodiversity and constraint holocaust.
And there is just so much to be understood, very fulfilling. Ecology is arguably the oldest vein of science, it is the study of life at home after all. concepts from ecology are helpful for understanding all aspects of living.
