It's more than that, it's an exercise in restraining one's focus to a single thing (breath, mantra whatever). It has some research behind it now. It is not easy to do though, I find myself wanting to get up after just 20 min.

I find it useful to help center your mind and calm yourself. Breathing exercises absolutely lower blood pressure and anxiety.

Shit you've got all kinds of options, personally I just focus on slow deep inhalation through the nose, hold in my lungs for a few counts, then a slow exhale through the mouth.
It's important to breathe with your diaphragm (watch how a baby breathes when it sleeps, it pooched out its belly when it inhales, and sucks it in for the exhale). Keep this up until you find yourself naturally setting into a pattern of circular breathing.
But there are many many breathing exercises depending on what you're trying to accomplish.

Mindfulness Meditation is constantly bringing back your attention to some focus, and more generally, what you are experiencing right at the moment, without any thoughts on the matter, just the experience. I usually don't have time (or I at least manage it too poorly) to meditate daily but the days that I do meditate I feel absolutely amazing. I feel calm yet energetic and peaceful. I highly recommend meditation. Look at the different methods to see which is right for you though.

When i meditate, I simply focus on the breath, feelig it on tje tip of my nose, then filling my lungs.

When a thought emerges, I let it run its course. Sometimes you can catch a glimpse of that primordial state of the mind, when its not distracred by thought, and it’s truly special.

Well, what happens eventually when you have been meditating for years is you become so aware that you become aware that you don't exist as the individual you thought you were. So there is no "i" in the sense you see "i" as you do now and there for you don't take yourself as serious and can stop being anxious. So you can have your cake and eat it.

Psychology student here. There's a growing body of research pointing towards the hypothesis that meditation does have some positive effects. I'm about to try it myself. Sometimes some teachers (specially the I/O psychologists) makes us do 15 minutes of it. It does feel better, although I could do without the New age music.

It's more about being mindful of the present moment. Not getting bogged down in the past, or making big hypothetical plans for the future, it's the idea that you focus on whats in front of you.
Meditation is generally about riding the "zone out" feeling.

I do Tony Robbin's priming method. Very simple:

1) Sit down straight like you do in a chair.
2) Raise your hands above your head for 30 seconds, breathing in when hands go up and exhaling when hands go down. 3x (3 mins).
3) Put hands on heart for 30 seconds, feel the blood go through (30 secs).
4) Think about 3x things that you are grateful for (3 mins)
5) 3 things you want to accomplish, today/tomorrow/this year, whatever. (3 mins).

So nearly 10 mins. Easy.
