So, what did you say? Did you explain how it works to her, or did you make this thread to admit that you don't know either?

"And that's why you're going to be a pole dancer when you grow up. Now shut up skank, men and decent women are trying to learn."

1 Use rotation matrices to derive angle addition formulas
2 Let x=y

You're a grown man posting an upset picture with a gun and the caption "Kill me." because a school girl hasn't been introduced to algebra/notation?

People must hate you. Sorry, but how is this a thread? Why do you care. You're the teacher, WHY WON'T YOU EXPLAIN IT TO HER? /sci/ was always bad but I swear to God 2017 /sci/ is something else.

Just say it’s like a label or some shit. “A price tag is assigning a value to the article of clothing.” Then abstract and generalize. I don’t know how people have trouble with variables but being an autist about it just fuels peoples avoidance of math

>good question suzy, let's pretend there are ten apples in total and you want to split the apples between you and your friend such that you have 4 more apples than your friend.
>now, without thinking, do you know how many apples you and your friend will have?
>probably not, but let's try and figure it out. Since we don't know how many apples you both will have let's say your friend will have have "x" apples; don't worry that "x" is a letter and not a number. Just think of "x" as a placeholder for a number you don't know.
>now if you want 4 more apples than your friend and your friend has "x" apples, how many apples will you have? you'll have "x" + 4 apples.
>now, since you want to split 10 apples between you and your friend and your friend has "x" apples and you have "x" + 4 apples, that means that "x" (apples for your friend) + "x" + 4 (apples for you) = 10.
>doing some algebra, we see "x" = 3. since "x" was placeholder number for the number of apples your friend will have, your friend will have 3 apples and you will have 3+4=7 apples.
was that so hard? now stop berating high schoolers on a mongolian knitting exchange forum and do your job.

I'm not convinced that rotation matrices are an appropriate and understandable way to derive trig formulas to precalc students who know squat about linear algebra.

Yeah rotation matrices are for chumps. At least teach them about quaternions and abstract algebra

People are cruel and heartless, people with true humanity are hard to come by nowadays. If you're directing this at me and assuming I'm laughing at autists, well really I was just pointing out that anyone who alludes to a student becoming a whore because she doesn't understand variables probably has something wrong with them. The lack of empathy combined with wanting to use an unnecessarily complex teaching method for high school students makes me assume autism. Sure that girl probably isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer but shutting her out of the enlightenment of education is a surefire way to steer her towards the wrong path in life.

This brings up another tragedy of modern society: that the people who hold our childrens' minds in their hands are so poorly motivated and compensated.

That's prety normal, m8. Not all people get all abstrations at first. At 13 I simply couldn't understand what "solving for 'x'" meant. I also remember reading about some guy who couldn't grasp something really basic about geometry when he was a kid, but after IQ testing he turned out to be a genius. He only had some block with that specific subject.

I don't mean explaining things in simple terms, but why always everyone explain everything in terms of apples and not anything else? Why apples? How can a letter be a number? Say you have this and this many apples..., What are trig functions? Let's consider an unit apple centered in the origin...
For fuck's sake, there are so many things you can use to colloquially explain something, why everyone chooses apples?

Former mathlet here, i went through all of middle school, and most of high school not understanding algebra, mostly because i didnt give a shit, and my teacher's (along with the rest of my fucking class) did nothing but mock me. No one wanted to fucking teach me anything, and i was mocked ceaselessly. Dropped out of college, and started learning more advanced math and science, on my own accord, because i felt like trash, and while im certainly no mathematician, im much better at math then I was, which is nice.

If you don't understand basic algebra by highschool there's something wrong with the system and it's really easy to get pissed. Imagine you are told you need to teach calculus to some poor highschooler who doesn't understand functions and doesn't know how to manipulate algebraic symbols. Theb it's your fault for not teaching shit you should be required to know? Fuck thay, I've seriously tried with many students but in the end they don't know shit.

Yup, but they're probably psychopaths or have some other mental problem that strips them of their ability to empathize and communicate sincerely
