most mathematicians take pride in the fact we get to contribute not to society but only to other mathematicians and society will put them on a pedestal and call them geniuses even though most of what we do is basically just combining results of other mathematicians and seeing if you can generalize the result

basic research is very important for there to be a hope of applied research making big leaps. airplanes weren't made through trial and error. the computer was not made through trial and error. mountains of theory were behind them, theory that seemed completely otherworldly at times.
