I get nervous speaking to large numbers of people. I'll be able to communicate optimally if I'm not showing signs of nervousness and my presentation will be better for it.

How nervous?

People think they do better when they aren't nervous, they aren't always right. Sometimes you can use that "edge". People don't notice most of your nervousness anyway.

A long time ago I couldn't speak in front of groups of people at all, I'd have panic attacks. My voice would start breaking, couldn't breathe, facial twitches, stuttering, heavy sweating. It was hilarious, but it really fuckin sucked.

Then I got to the point where I could do it decently with etizolam or lorazepam, it was like a safety net. I had to do a couple of presentations without the net, and I was nervous but everyone said it was great. Now I never take meds, I prefer the edge.

It's just something else to work on. If you think you're gonna freak without it, take the drugs. But maybe consider getting to the point where you can do it without Rx assistance.

But yeah, 1mg of lorazepam is probably the sweet spot. Any more you'll be too sedated

You don't want to take enough to slur your speech. Depends on your tolerance. If you aren't sure I probably wouldn't take it. You might just end up asleep in front of your class.

My PI said he couldn't present sober until two years into grad school. He kept a thermos full of gin and tonic just for such occasions.
