How would one go about improving their menthal arithmetic? I'm quite slow when it comes to doing calculations in my head and I have an upcoming examination that requires you to solve as many problems as you can under a harsh time limit. Has anyone ever tried improving mental arithmetic specifically before?

It's all repetition anon, Kumon helped me a little bit in that regard. After grinding out page of low level (so early alphabet tier) problems I quit but the mental math stuck. Also look for patterns like 3.5x10^5/1.75x10^-3 would get you a number that is 10^8 since dividinf by a negative exponent means adding (the answer is 2x10^8

Cheers

There's a simple method for doing large-scale arithmetic calculations quickly in your head, can't really remember what it was called. There are special schools in Japan where they practice it.

Try to remember it, I'm curious now.

What's the name of those japanese schools? Where did you learn about them?

Probably not, but it increases your overall mathematical skills, which is pretty useful.

I'm reposting stuff I poste but whatever. I programmed a thing to give me two numbers and I have to input their product. I sucked at arithmetic and wanted to practice my multiplication what did I do?
First I practiced multiplying numbers under 10.
I figured out strategies to multiply by each number, but there were still some less obvious ones like: 7*8=56, 7*6=42 7*3=21. So I asked the program to only give me numbers from 6 to 8. I did a lot of them and now it's automatic, 0 time to think necessary.
Then I started multiplying numbers above 10. I started by practicing the square of numbers between 10 and 19.

Basically here's how you do it. Figure general techniques. Then practice operations from a very small list of very easy numbers until it's automatic. Do it a lot and very quickly.
Then make the list bigger and harder if it's still really easy and very quick.

To be honest practice addition too. I regret not practicing addition when I was doing this stuff.

If you can't program use this instead: http://arithmetic.zetamac.com/

Different guy here.

The literature on IQ research, that I've read, claims the opposite. Don't have any sources on hand though. If you have any resources claiming your viewpoint, I'd be happy to read through it.

Also, acquiring knowledge on specific things such as music and instruments boosts your IQ by 7 points:
