A quick Google search tells me that the Earth's curvature is about 8 inches per mile. 8 x 237 gets you 1896 inches, or about 0.3 miles.

So my explanation is basically the person who made that did no research and just made something that fit his argument.

Anyway, if you use a curvature calculator you can see that about 20 peaks in the French Alps should be visible above the horizon from the summit of Mont Canigou.
