I have no deep understanding of physics/engineering, so this is probably a retarded idea. But would it be possible to create a car/vehicle where the drivers seat/cockpit was suspended within some sort of shell to reduce the impact from collisions?

Here is a mockup I have done, can I get some input from engineers? The suspension systems tightness could be controlled by motion sensors that detect collisions. If there is more interest, I will draw a mock up of my theory of how such a device would work in the event of a crash.

Well I'm mostly interested in this being applied to a drop pod type of vehicle, but I also wondered if it could be applied to cars too.

The suspension cables would need to be something that could shift between flexible & rigid depending on the conditions. But forgetting all that, is the core theory (suspension to reduce collision impact) something that could actually be feasible? Like I said, no real understanding of physics and shit, just curious.

>Drop pod
Remove suspension system to save weight, land it space x style. Also, drop pods are sci fi.

Yea, I figured they're basically mech-tier but, I still want to know if suspension systems could be used to noticeably reduce collision impact.

what if you used really heavy springs as a suspension system?

Don't worry, it's very retarded.

It's called a crumple zone and it's a standard feature in most cars. There are also a number of designs for Mars landers that are inside an inflatable cushion, kind of like a shock absorbing shell. So no, it's not retarded, it's so not retarded that it's already been done.

Surprised to see this thread is still up. But I'm glad I'm not a complete retard.

Yes it would be noticeable but not feasible when you can build the vehicle to crumple up and absorb a lot of the impact. Also if the shocks become overloaded and break the occupant gets slammed into the shell.
