In the math department? Hard upper divs, some apathetic professors, really interesting topics, some really nice and passionate professors, some pretentious kids, a lot of really smart ones, expensive cost of living, and depending on what you're used to, probably a very hard first semester. It gets easier though, and I have no regrets.

Also people complaining about the school being too liberal don't really know what they're talking about, you'll see when you get here - most students are moderate, and the people who show up on campus and do dumb shit aren't students, just antifa and the alt-right being stupid

I dont know it depends on the college really. My first two years of college so far have been easier than high school simply because of the time and workload. High school is like 8 hours a day of like 7 or 8 classes in a row. College you might have days with no classes or days with 5 classes. Idk some people find it hard, but to me the lower amount of classes and time spent per day is just way easier.

Not the same fag, but I go to ucla math.

It honestly varies from class to class, professor to professor. You can have one professor make a class so needlessly tedious & difficult, and others make the class nothing but a joy to be in. The major problem with UCLA's math department is that they've got their head up their asses with how "good" of a school they are. It's with this in mind, that profs make what should be an easy class way too fucking hard for literally no reason. Many professors just read out of a textbook; I've had at least 3 or 4 professors in the math department straight up not knowing what they're teaching. But there are good professors you just have to know you're learning style and be flexible with your scheduling. The Honors classes are fun if you're motivated/interested.

>>9067973
If you're transferring in as a junior, take the Honors Algebra in the fall with professor Richard Elman. Easily best math prof I've ever taken. Definitely recommend the Honors Linear Algebra with David Gieseker, he's old & his lectures are scattered but the class is easy and he's very kind. The professor teaching Honors Analysis, I know nothing about but she did get her PhD under Tao. You can look on the website and see who is teaching what courses in the math department all year so you can look them up online if you want to.

No. All Bachelor's degrees awarded by Cambridge are BAs, for historical reasons and to confuse people. This doesn't have the same meaning as BAs from most universities.

Some courses, like Physics, also offer a fourth year after which you get a Master's, in this case MSci. This fourth year typically has a grade barrier (2:1 or first depending on the course).

It's nearly impossible to get in for pre-med/bio/chem. Much easier for math/physics to get in, I recommend doing physics or math and take some bio courses if you want to go to med school. The thing about med school is everyone applying did bio/chem/pre-med so those are the least likely to get in, whereas for math/physics there's only a few students applying every year, so your chances of getting into med school are significantly greater

Structural Engineering Senior here, am taking my last undergraduate final in two days- I'm set to start my Master's in less than a month, which is when I will get annihilated. The architectural & infrastructure-based disciplines tend to be theoretical no matter where you go. They can't go letting students actually have their buildings made, so it's just something that's on the bill when you choose structural. Of course, you can get around that by going into a real-world training program with one of the many companies lined up at Tech's door, though the low demand specifically for trainee-level structural engineers could make it a chore to hunt one down.

Also, for its more hands-on flagship programs, Tech is definitely more than theory. If you nose around campus some, you'll find that there are plenty of workshops and high-end tools available for the students to tinker. Even though I graduated mechanical, I spent many a moon in the MRDC electronics workshop and learned a lot more than I planned to.

I got baited to attend by the rankings, and so did everyone else here. But the thing about rankings is that they're just a number and nobody in the real world really cares that Illinois is #4 or #1 or #5 in anything.

Having actually been here for a couple of years now and seeing what the typical undergrad student here is like (grading their assignments, TAing senior level classes, etc), I can honestly say that the quality of the students here, on a pure merit basis, just doesn't stack up.

I've found that if you take away the rankings and perception, the substance just isn't there. At least at the undergraduate level.

Even when comparing between the curricula here and some lower ranked university, a lot of times the lower ranked university just has an objectively more rigorous and comprehensive treatment of the material. I'm not even joking. I've sat on the curriculum committee for a class where a graduate student who did his undergrad at CMU proposed a change to make it in line with what he experienced in his undergrad, and they shot it down because they were scared that the students didn't know enough C and they felt it was better to stick with Java.

>the students didn't know enough C and they felt it was better to stick with Java

That doesn't sound right, considering that C programming is required for the curriculum, starting at ECE 220:
>https://wiki.illinois.edu/wiki/display/ece220/Course+Overview+and+Policies

That's not to say that every student displays anything more than surface-level understanding of their coursework. There really are a bunch of people from these programs who are unprepared to face the world, who have a hard time figuring out things that aren't enumerated for them in a textbook. It's a real bitch being on a team with these people in a required course, but it makes a decent story for the job interview if you wind up having to drag them along to get your grade.

There are also people who are, as you put it, overqualified. They're not as few and far between as you might think, though they're often the minority if there isn't a well-established professional work program on campus. Co-ops and internships really do build up the wisdom you're referring to when it comes to qualification. I'll tell you that once you graduate, the only qualifications that matter are your DOCUMENTED achievements. It's really not enough to be more intellectually lucid than your peers. What exactly have you done that makes you overqualified?

I should have said that example of mine was in the CS dept, not ECE.

>It's a real bitch being on a team with these people in a required course, but it makes a decent story for the job interview if you wind up having to drag them along to get your grade.
I didn't know anyone in a certain systems course when I was taking it since everyone was a junior or senior, so I got randomed with 3 seniors. My naive self thought they'd be somewhat decent because they were a random sample. I was wrong - they were shit precisely because they represented the average. The only thing that made me get an A in that class after barely finishing the final MP was that I was hitting above 2 standard deviations on every exam.

And it's useless bitching about them in a job interview because employers don't want sob stories. Not constantly smiling is already a red flag for any job interviewer.

>I'll tell you that once you graduate, the only qualifications that matter are your DOCUMENTED achievements
Yeah, here's the thing. The "documented achievements" that most students here brag about is being part of some charity group, or being student council president in high school, or even worse yet, being oppressed because of being a minority or something. Just a bunch of soft factors which make it really pathetic considering the major they chose.

If you really took a good hard look at their resume and completely removed the part where they say they attend here, you'd assume they went to ITT Tech or something like that.

>What exactly have you done that makes you overqualified?
Right off the bat, I had an SAT score of, lets say north of 2.3K. I thought I'd meet many people like that here so it wasn't a big deal. I was very, very wrong.

I have a 4.0 GPA. And no, it's not because of retarded intro freshman physics, calculus, or chemistry because I credited all that when entering. No, I didn't go to community college either.

I have published papers too. Any more and I'll doxx myself.

1. the standard non-honors route
2. the honors route
1 seemed normal, nothing crazy
2 will drive you crazy. your undergrad courses will have the expectations of graduate courses (in my year, they were harder because the professor decided to "push" the 99% international asians in analysis - basic qualifying exam was super easy after that). you will take graduate courses senior year or sooner.

oh, and to give you an idea of how things turned out:
i graduated with 3.3 overall, 3.0 in major - part of that was some classes not letting more than 8 students get As, but most of it was me. i was caught in a place where i wanted to go to grad school, but the only places i felt i would get into were ones where i would spend the first year taking courses i already had because of my poor grades (which i did not feel were indicative of my actual knowledge). when i was studying for the math GRE subject test, i was getting very, very high scores on practice exams, but i didn't feel that would be enough. so i got a job, and i work as a mathematician now. it's great.

I'm in physics at LA and that shit drives me up the fucking wall. Outside of 4AL and 4BL it's generally not a thing in the physics department, but I took a class on plasma electronics in the engineering department and it seemed so fucking contrived. They made the exams incredibly difficult (the average was like 25%) and gave practically nobody an A. I don't get why the engineering departments choose to do this when all it does it disadvantage UCLA students in terms of getting into grad school and it's disappointing to hear it happens in maths too

>> No.9081269

>>9081261
engineering is different though, since the department will walk you into a job. not bashing on engineers or claiming one major is harder than another, but for all of the difficulty they have all sorts of guidance, career fairs, etc. for engineers specifically. every single engineer undergrad said it was hard, and every single one felt that if they didn't get a job immediately after graduating (or months before) it was because they themselves screwed up big time somewhere. to be fair, that's probably because the department has an easier time guiding students in more specific fields of study than "math"

>sob stories
Not sob stories. They're gonna want to know about a time that you faced adversity, and you can frame it as a time when you took the reins of leadership for the team. They might also hit you with what you tried to do to get them to work and what you would do in a work environment where people can actually face discipline for dragging ass.

>If you really took a good hard look at their resume
You'd have to see their resumes for you to judge it. If you can manage it, try attending a career fair and asking other students if you could have a copy of their resumes. That way, you can get an objective grasp on the kind of people you're attending (and eventually competing) with.

That said, any employer knows that charity work or burger flipping would just be filler. That's to say that they wouldn't care about it unless you go for an apprentice-level position like a co-op or internship. They're gonna care about the apprentice-level work and not the filler when you get to the entry-level, though.

>SAT
Employers won't care, and after the application process, even the college doesn't care, so for all intents and purposes, it is not an achievement.

>GPA
It's an achievement to some, but beware of hard GPA requirements. The ones that care that much about GPA are the ones who can't otherwise judge whether or not you can do the job. Senior engineers' judgment is a better metric than GPA, but not everyone wants to offer direct oversight. They sometimes just watch what they give you and what you spit out. That's to say, they don't know what you're doing anyway, and that may apply to other people you're put onto a team with. Soft GPA requirements are less likely to be trouble, though.

>published papers
Though it doesn't overqualify you, this might count as an achievement, provided that you wrote something that couldn't have been written by just anyone that was your age. Extra points if it shows passion for the field that you wind up applying for.

I cannot do this without at least insinuating my team members are incapable or at the very worst, retarded. And that reflects badly on me as a person because I would come off as an arrogant prick, can't work in teams, judgmental, etc.

>If you can manage it, try attending a career fair and asking other students if you could have a copy of their resumes.

I did this. I also look through stacks of resumes from the more motivated students applying to be part of a research lab I'm affiliated with.

>Employers won't care, and after the application process, even the college doesn't care, so for all intents and purposes, it is not an achievement.

It is a valid comparison metric though, especially considering the average student can't even break 2000. I'm not splitting hairs at the higher end of the scale here between 2200 or 2100, just looking at the broad distribution.

Or maybe, volunteering at a soup kitchen makes one a good engineer and I've overlooked that holistic factor that employers and schools rage about.

In any case, if having a perfect GPA in upper level courses or near perfect standardized test scores or published papers as an undergrad does not qualify anyone at this university, then by that metric you wouldn't believe how underqualified the 90% of the students here, most of whom do not even have any one of those things, are.
