As humans colonize space we will have to develop some kind of technology to protect us from electromagnetic particles.

Does anyone have any theories as to how they would do this?

Relatively thin sheets of plastic?

more along the lines of thick plates of lead.

I was thinking more along the lines of an "energy barrier" rather than "physical" types of armor.

What made you think of physical barriers first?

Me, I thought of it first becasue it was what I was familiar with.

Not so good for charged particles.

I'm more worried about charged particles.

I think the drive to protect against charged particles will birth some type of energy shield made of inversely charged particles of whatever its supposed to be blocking.

But that got me thinking...which woukd come first. Electromagnetic shields to protect us from charged particles or some kind of charged particle weapon and then in response comes the electromagnetic shield

A strong electromagnet would do the trick. If it works for the planet, it'll work elsewhere.

Easy, just don't send humans. Make robots do it.

Just a solar flare could disrupt our magnetic field and kill everything on earth. I think it needs to be more than an "always on" Protoss type shield. Maybe something that senses the incoming wave and just makes a sheild of that wave forms opposite energy?

That's not colonization if robots do it.
