Why do humans love dogs so much. When my dog greets me after work it gives me the warm and fuzzies. Is there a biological reason humans form emotional bonds with animals of species?

Humans and dogs probably co-evolved over the last 30k or so years. The productivity and survivability boost that came with using dogs for hunting and guarding would have led to dog-lovers basically out-competing dog-haters rather fast.

Dogs might even have changed the human brain since outsourcing awareness to dogs let humans focus their brain on intellectual stuff - so without dogs we might have still been living in caves.

This guy gets it.

It also seems humans have evolved to understand dogs. The co-evolution is rather profound.

I also had a dog.

Dogs being a part of your "family" gave an advantage -- protection from predators, assistance in hunting, eat the scraps before the rot... People who liked dogs being around survived in greater percentages than those who did not.

Humans are social animals and use pets as a substitution for humans.

Cats also provided some advantages but humans do not connect as well with cats as with dogs.

Perhaps cats provide less advantage? They are good for pest control, almost as good for cleaning up the scraps, but not so good as hunting companions -- so we have not been as strongly solected to like them.

Hard to tell. Do we even know how well suited dogs were originally for use in hunting?

The strange thing is that dogs are very specialised - shepherds will, well, shepherd herds but are not suited for hunting birds and vice versa. And dogs cannot be taught to do things outside what they were bred for. I am not sure why since there is no doubt that dogs are intelligent and can learn. Some say dogs can learn to understand 40 words.

Dogs also know when they prefer not to understand...

Instead of having to be constantly aware of potential predators, we have puppers that can smell/hear things much better than us so humans can focus on other things like tracking/hunting

i read the same thing about dogs and humans changing eachother's brain structure over course of their co-evolution but i cant find the source at the moment
