>If you are a white cis man (meaning you identify as male and you were assigned male at birth) you almost certainly should resign from your position of power. That’s right, please quit. Too difficult? Well, as a first step, at least get off your hiring committee, your curriculum committee, and make sure you’re replaced by a woman of color or trans person.

Turns out she's a math professor at the University of Hawaii. The AMS should not be pushing this nonsense! Does anyone know why they're doing this.

Oh boy, it's this person again. It took her 12 years to do a PhD in math. She did it at Princeton because diversity reasons and did it without a bachelors in anything STEM related. She was supervised by Manjul Bhargava, a fields medalist, who ended up writing her thesis for her just to get her out. This is evident in her one publication which shares the name of her thesis for which she is not the first author. I really hope she didn't waste too much of Bhargava's time.

Everyone understands the marionette whether it’s walking or dancing or fighting. We can see it and it makes sense. But watch instead the hands of the puppeteers. Can you look at the hand movements of the puppeteers and know what the marionette is doing? A puppeteer walks up to you and says “I’m really excited about figuring out Fermat’s Last Thumb Bend!” You say, “huh?” The puppeteer responds, “Oh, well, it’s simply a matter of realizing that the main thumb joint has several properties that distinguish it from...” You’re already starting to fantasize about the Zombie Apocalypse. Imagine it gets worse. Much, much worse. Imagine that the marionettes we see are controlled by mari- onettoids we don’t see which are in turn controlled by pre-puppeteers which are finally controlled by actual puppeteers. I teach with inquiry, and I emphasize communication, collaboration, multiple perspectives, and learning from each other because of beliefs I hold about learning. Because I’ve been explicit about these values and design choices, I can connect the kinds of discussions of politics in this post to the course, so it feels related. Moreover, because I’ve built this foundation early in the course, these political conversations are part of the continuity of the course, not breaks from the course to do something awkward that closes completely when they’re over. How did she get into Princeton again? Looking at her CV she majored in "romance languages" and was a masters student for 7 fucking years before taking off another 6 to raise a child, then just popped back into her thesis for a year before leaving, no wonder the thesis is so shit, it takes a several months to compile, clean, and write up a good thesis, but she basically just shitted this out in a year. Seriously read the thesis, it's bad.

That's because other people don't. I was just discussing this the other day. Basically, math papers are a bitch to read. >academia is full of people who got in there because of their gender and skin color
>the only way to fix it is to put more people in there based on their gender and skin color
this is what drives me up the fucking wall about my fellow lefties. these kinds of diversity initiatives don't fucking work because:
a) they're trying to fix wrongful discrimination by using wrongful discrimination, not working towards an actual meritocracy,
b) if white cis men who favor equality leave positions of power, all it means is that white cis men who oppose equality will be comparatively enriched in the upper echelons, and
c) it doesn't address the underlying problem of women and minorities being discouraged AS GRADE SCHOOLERS from pursuing careers in STEM.

want to make academia more diverse? excellent! here's how you do it:
>decouple school funding from local property taxes, so growing up in a poor neighborhood doesn't condemn you do having a shitty education
>fund inclusive initiatives to get kids involved and interested in science; after-school tutoring, school clubs, and school visits from professionals are all good ways to go. focus on the message that science and math are for EVERYONE
>shit, just send more money to schools in general
>train hiring committee members on combating implicit bias. everyone's got it, but it only becomes a problem if we're unaware of it and let it tilt our actions
the answer to women and minorities being underrepresented in academia isn't to lower the standards for them, but rather to give them the same shot as white men have. instead of excusing people who were set up to fail, let's stop setting them up to fail. this is the kind of "soft racism of low expectations" shit that GWB talked about. gotta think of future generations here.
but there are people on the left who think that everything can be fixed overnight if we just kick out the white men and replace them with women of color. and that's unrealistic, unethical, and fuckstupid.

Oh, fuck sake.
Stream of consciousness is not a way to write a thesis. You may be charming and funny and polished as a speaker, but it's simply not possible to write how one speaks and come up with something intelligible. In print, maintaining flow is far less important than in the spoken word. Writing well is less about arranging a compelling narrative, and more about laying out your argument in a clear and concise way. You don't need to punctuate things with an offhand comment to give your audience time to catch up, if you're writing; you can proceed directly to your next point, and the reader will simply follow at their own pace. Nor is it necessary to recapitulate every paragraph with a summary; the reader has the luxury of going back and rereading a passage they are unclear on. Written communication can be more compact, because the pace is controlled by the reader rather than the writer, and because the writer has the opportunity to edit it before shipping it off, it should be significantly more polished.

Of course, if I expressed any of these views to her, she'd probably accuse me of tone policing. But just because we shouldn't be snobs about colloquial versus formal modes of speech doesn't mean we can't use formal speech in, say, A DOCTORAL THESIS/DISSERTATION. I can slip into Chicagoland street talk (heavily influenced by African-American Vernacular English, Yiddish, Polish, and Irish speech patterns) but you better believe I'm not going to include it in a poster abstract.

They added an addendum. The page is different than the archived version that can be seen here https://archive.fo/CqQYg

ADDENDUM: Since last Friday, this post has been getting lots of comments, some of which are very inappropriate. We would like to remind our readers of a few things:

This is a blog post, an opinion piece, and a provocation to think. As Piper says, it is about “shifting perspective”. It is not being written by a university president, nor is it something we are acting upon. We are not actually firing anyone. A common argumentation device is to take something to the extreme to really help us do the shifting (and often with things regarding race and gender, this is an effective device, albeit upsetting for some). This also does not necessarily represent the opinions of the AMS and its members, it represents our point of view.
We assert our right to express controversial opinions in a civilized way, because it is legal to do so. We are not even the first or most extreme, we are just doing this from a different point of view. Here is a Breitbart piece on the exact counter-argument, which I found deeply offensive but nonetheless did not cause me to explode in rage and start a social media war.
Please do share your comments if you disagree, but recall our guidelines for posting comments (see below).
Any comments containing profanity, insults, personal attacks, or suggestions of violence will not be approved, no matter how carefully reasoned the rest of your comment was.
We will try to respond to comments, but the sheer volume is making it hard to do so in a timely manner. Rest assured that if your comment follows the guidelines (and see item (4)) it will at least be posted.
Thanks for reading the inclusion/exclusion blog.

there's more to racism and sexism than just some white guy saying "UR NOT ALLOWED"
there's a stigma against women going into STEM; they're seen as boys' fields, which is why girls are less likely to go into science. a black kid in middle school will be perceived by his peers as "acting white" if he expresses an interest in comp sci, in a lot of places. this is what outreach is supposed to combat.

both SJWs and /pol/acks need to let go of this idea that racism and sexism are enforced by boogiemen who lurk around to keep women and minorities where they belong; the most insidious ideas are the ones that nobody really wants anymore, but still hang on because we don't realize how much they affect our subconscious reasoning. very few people would go up to little Annie in third grade and tell her "oh sweetie, girls can't be engineers; they have to be English teachers instead", but your average Annie gets that message all the same, from her classmates' attitudes, from the subconscious responses of teachers and parents, and from who they see representing those fields. and eventually Annie internalizes it (usually without even realizing it) and becomes less likely to go to engineering school.

this is part of why diversity in academia is important; to show impressionable children that no matter who you are, you can study whatever you want to study; there are no men's fields or women's fields, no white subjects or black subjects or asian subjects. of course, the flip side of this kind of representation is that those representatives (of whatever groups) have to actually be legitimate professionals in their field. people like Herron define themselves by their victimized status; she's not "a mathematician who happens to be a black woman", but has rather deliberately made herself "a black woman mathematician".

the Jackie Robinsons and Jerry Lawsons and Barbara McClintocks of the world didn't demand that everyone heap praise on them because they had survived discrimination. no, they fought through it all to show that they were great in their own right, and in so doing inspired others to follow in their footsteps. the ones who think they command respect just because they got a raw deal but still did okay? they're just pretenders, the flip side of the coin to the "good old boy" who got where he is through patronage and nepotism.

there is a cultural/societal perception that math and science are "for boys", which dissuades a lot of girls from studying them. look down the toy aisle at your local retailer; toys marketed to boys are more likely to involve combat and mechanisms, while those marketed to girls are more likely to involve socializing and artistic endeavors. (or, to simplify, boys play with action figures but girls play with dolls. there's a certain amount of this that does seem to be neurological, if studies on gorillas and infants are any guide, but it's enhanced by our culture.)
sorry about the garbled prose, though; I'm a little wiped out today.

>How do you explain females in the third world rushing to get into STEM?
in third world countries, formal education is the exception rather than the norm. there's often not the infrastructure outside of the main cities for kids to go to school, and economic conditions often mean that they drop out around middle school and start working instead because their families need the income. I'm talking about American/Western society, though.

like I said, these ideas worm their way into people's heads. kids are impressionable; they pick up on what's around them. and when elements within our culture tell kids that science is for white men and black men are supposed to be athletes or musicians instead, they internalize it. those kids being black themselves doesn't make them immune to it.

if you're trying to figure out who to blame, you're barking up the wrong tree. the people who got the ball rolling have been dead for centuries. institutionalized racism in America is a relic left over from an economic system based on labor-intensive cash crops, a tool designed to enrich the moneyed classes by recruiting poor white people to keep black slaves subdued.
in the end, it was a bad deal for everybody involved; black Africans and their descendants were brutalized and exploited, working-class whites suffered from low wages and unemployment (since cheap slave labor got rid of a lot of the jobs they'd otherwise fill), and even the planters ended up screwing themselves over eventually (since they'd sunk their money into slaves, and then their slaves were all freed after the war). (note of course that most SJWs would call for my head on a spike for admitting that slavery was bad for people besides blacks.) but some patterns in society have a way of propagating themselves even if they're not beneficial to anyone. as before, the only ones benefiting from this holdover are rich assholes who stoke divisions to distract the working man from how they're getting screwed.
