The first is wrong. Matter can and has been created and destroyed. Energy cannot be created or destroyed.

The second is a false dichotomy. The universe can have infinite volume and still be expanding, since the expansion refers to the density of space within any finite part.

Space. Empty space. It is nothing. Existing space is defined by matter/energy inhabiting it. There is no reason to assume there is infinite matter.
The big bang could very well have been a local event. It is all we know because our known universe is all from within it. We have no way of knowing what is beyond that. More of the same or actual nonexistence? I believe a lot more of the same and then far far away, we have nonexistence, actual "empty space".
Empty space has no bounds, it needs no container. Filled space is the anomaly, it needs matter and it defines its dimensions by being there.
