It doesn't. Only birth canal size is important for giving birth successfully and with less effort. However, a human who is overweight shows that they can attain food, thus they stand more of a chance of being able to care for more children. A skinny person may or may not be able to sustain a child or more children.

This isn't a modern society thing. This is something that developed into society at the early stages of humanity when food was hard to get and didn't come from take out or the drive through. It is meaningless in most areas of most 1st world societies now.

Obviously once a woman gets out of the healthy weight range and starts becoming overweight or obese that trend reverses and the nutritional content of the milk also declines, this is no excuse for obesity. For example in the US the average weight is already higher and 'thick' is just used for women who are unhealthily overweight.

But, yes, the 'normal' western standard of ideal female beauty is much thinner than the ideal from a health perspective, a woman with curves is objectively healthier and better able to nurture her offspring than a thin woman.

But fat probably also means a higher probability of the mother (and baby) to survive during pregnancy, as fat is stored energy which is available when there's otherwise not enough food around.
