There are no really-existing public Ivies outside of UC Berkeley. MIT is good, they do the Diversity stuff a little but not nearly as much as the other top universities. The only place that is 100% merit based is Caltech and it's like 70% Asian. I remember that back when I was in my senior year I looked at many US universities and thought that because my grades were mediocre I would never get accepted to a good US uni nor would I be able to get good financial support so instead I decided to study locally.

Harvard's academic programs in serious fields of study are among the best if you're interested in using them. Most of the people who are only there to get their ruling class entry card stamped just take econ or humanities or something. You can major in women's studies and still get a job at Goldman Sachs if you did your undergrad at Harvard. Princeton is extremely rigorous. Yale is less prestigious in science than Harvard or Princeton but is still extremely good. Dartmouth would probably be closest to the country club school, even Brown has serious research going on.

in industry, certain schools are known for certain things. Purdue and Texas A&M are the best in the world at turbomachinery and gas compression.

same thing with other schools. Colorado School of Mines is god tier for anything to do with petroleum. U Mich for nuclear stuff, etc. those rankings you see when you do a half assed google search don't actually mean anything to people in the know.

if you want to know who is best at what, see who is recruiting out of that school and start reading trade journals.
