Honestly, it wasn't that different from a normal internship with any other engineering firm. They did treat the interns as real employees, which was nice, although the pay did not reflect this. Work was pretty fast paced, and working ~70hrs/week was expected. Most of the employees were decent people. As for Elon, the other anon's post sums it up perfectly. He walks around the office, comes up to you randomly, asks what you're working on, and then offers some small critique. When I address his suggestion (i.e. "yes, we tried that, and it is sub-optimal for this reason") he would scowl, look like I'm an idiot, and book it out of my cubicle super fast. In meetings, Elon has a huge superiority complex. He asks some straightforward question and then looks around the room like "None of you Schmucks could have ever thought of that". And he always thinks people are inadequate. He doesn't explain himself well? Your fault. He is downright wrong? Your fault. He claims to still work as an engineer, but honestly, he only ever addresses very surface engineering questions. He does seem to have a limitless supply of energy though, which I suppose is an asset.

Anon, these types of hours are extremely common in any positions whatever of actual responsibility. Basically anything north of the lowest pleb-retail jobs involving anything like a managerial or actual skilled function. I used to have a shit warehouse job at a place that was growing rapidly, and for about 18 months 10-14 hour days, six day weeks were common, averaging 55-70hrs/wk, and I was damn glad to do it-particualrly since I was getting all that mad OT. But I've just described a pure peon role.

You can still have a life outside of work, even with those types of hours. It's once you get into the 80-110 stuff that you're basically a doctor in residence or some poor finance sod who only lives for money and naught else.

theres a thing in the US called "paying your dues". your first entry level STEM gig is guaranteed to be a hardcore grind, ideally at a big name company that looks good on a resume. you work that for 3-5 years, grab some licenses/certifications, and then move on. its the nature of our career progression. most people do have the opportunity to get some work-a-day 9-5 gig fresh out of college, but that doesn't pay much and you are setting yourself up for stagnation.

i get that money isn't everything and you need to take time to enjoy life, but building a career doesn't end with school. i've seen guys in their 50's turning the crank on some 65k a year cubicle job and it scares the fuck out of me that if i don't bust my ass i'm going to end up like one of them.

But we only need so many satellites, and launch costs are not even the principal cost involved in building/operating a satellite. In my experience, spacex is a meme company. Elon seems like a downright miserable guy who has a lot of strange/bad ideas about how the world works (gossip was always about him having a fucked up childhood/being bullied mercilessly, so this might explain it). They "came up with" a field of mathematics only they can understand, post anabelian froeboid geometrics. They took IUTeich to the next level. PAFG spawned off from a connection they saw between General Relativity, Witten's work in string theory, Grothendieck's work in anabelian geometry and IUTeich. They realised if they applied a new metric called the froeboid to the algebraic fundamental group G of an algebraic variety V, a pattern emerged which was fundamentally similar to patterns found in both string theory and modern general relativity, thus connecting the two. Objects are already capable of traveling through space, but this provided an answer as to how we can travel through time by connecting two points in time much like a wormhole connects two points in space, and it also gave us the answer as to why we experience time in only one direction and how we can build a device to travel in both (which they already built). Further work in this field by the brothers showed us that just like space can have multiple dimensions, so can time. So rather than just being able to go "forwards" or "backwards" through time, we might also be able to go "up" or "down". Space and time are essentially two identical constructs (of which there are more, though these are inaccessible to us, these different constructs are called existence yielding matrices or EYMs) just like horizontal and vertical are identical constructs, it's just from our reference point as beings which primarily exist in space and only secondarily in time, they seem very different. It's possible that other beings live primarily in time, primarily in both, or even primarily in all possible dimensions of all possible EYMs in existence. Ready for the next bombshell? Just like an infinite number of dimensions exist in each of the infinitely man EYMs, an infinite amount of EYMs exist in each of whatever the next structure is (we still understand little about it), and so on for all structures above that.

Elon Musk just won the dotcom lottery, he now lives in a bubble surrounded by yes-men and sycophants who coax him into believing things like the hyperloop meme which is as ridiculous as SOLAR FREAKING ROADWAYS

It not a meme company. It is really important for space tourism.Commericalizing astronomy will increase the budgets of this field.Elon may have lack of humor and have sone obsession aboput his identity, ego but he is really doing his jobs close to perfect and he is investing really important and right things.By insulting him you guys are just gaining free mental pleasure, nothing more and gaining free reward is so cringey fior others. Please dont do this.

The memeing and celebrity status is all calculated from Elon.

He wants his company to succeed. It is easier for your company to succeed if you meme the fuck out of everyone.

At the end of the day I'm ok with this because he companies are doing legitimate work.

Pick one anon. Elon Musk makes toys for rich people, look at Tesla. It's not going to save the world, same as Space X is not going to save humanity. He makes a living on autistics beliving the hype and the cult around it and subsidies from the government.
How is going to Mars more important than saving earth right now. Why is a Hyper-Loop and Solar highways being pushed so hard when you could build Super fast trains for cheaper and faster with proven technology?

When there would be a new technology always rich people use those things first.Look at tesla they are always trying to make cheaper cars and to make this you need to atract rich people first. But opf course just making electiric cars doesnot save the nature.Because now we are using generaly fossil fuels for generating electiricity. So because of this creating more developed and way more cheaper solar panels are really so important. In private sector everthing works like this. You need to reach rich people first. We cannot go further with nasa's 20 billion dollar and esa's 5 billipn dollar anymore. We couldntt even go to moon after apollo missions.Because there is no enough budget. This field needs much more money than this and private companies always increase the budget of everyfield by commericalizing them.Maybe you will not be able to a space tourist but your grandchildrens probably will.

I have nothing against rich people, I love capitalism. But at the same I realize this is not important in the grand scheme of things.
Why are you focusing on the future, when we could be focusing on the now. Still give R and D to solar energy and implement it when it's practical, solar power in it's current state and even looking 20 years forward can't be the main source of energy for our consumption. Instead of funding a "mass production" of Telsa vehicles that will still be unfordable for most Americans/Canadians (35k for the new Tesla), fund public transportation, it's more efficient and helps more people travel than Tesla could ever do.

Everything complaint I've read about working for him was written by a pussy who wanted a comfortable life, not an actual engineer who wanted to build things because they knew they were important to society. Modern attitudes towards work are so fucking cancerous and lazy it makes me sick. Calling someone a "workaholic" is code for, "I'm a giant self-absorbed pussy that needs weekends because I don't understand the impact of my work." Only fags take breaks. My grandfather never fucking retired and worked until the day he died and so did everyone else worth mentioning from his generation. It wasn't "just their culture" it was because they knew what they were doing was important. Boomers, Gen Xers and millenials have no idea what the fuck they're doing or why it matters. They think rockets are fucking toys.

Why spend your life working your ass off? Our species and, the individuals that find themselves a part of it, arent worth the effort. I recommend finding a job that pays well, doing as little as humanly possible, finding a mate, procreating then just kicking back and enjoying life. Do some drugs, play video games, pursue hobbies. Thats what real intelligent people do, working your ass off is for chumps.

I saw Elon Musk at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.

He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.
