This is a fully expendable new rocket, due to the high payload. Echostar 23 is about 5.5 tonnes and the excess capacity will likely be used to launch it to higher than a normal GTO, to reduce the propellant cost of the circularization burn, and thereby increase the satellite's lifespan.

This is probably one of the old contracts that SpaceX signed when they didn't have much negotiating power to make margin for reuse.

>>8744129
They're still planning to do the relaunch before the end of the month. It'll carry SES 10, a 5.3 tonne GEO comsat. I believe there will be a recovery attempt. Obviously, it will have to be downrange, on the drone ship.

Right now they're saying March 30th, which is a little *too* close to push back again isn't it?

I mean unless they do that thing where the entire thing is set up on the launchpad and then somebody goes "5... 4... 3... 2... lol j/k we'll try again later"

Anyone else noticed the lights changing colors in the blast trench?
What did they mean by this?

>> No.8751972

>>8751963

You talking about the green flash?

TEAB is a chemical that burns on contact with air and is used on the Falcon 9 to light the Merlin engines. It burns with a bright green flame. During engine start up the pumps spin up and a small amount of TEAB is flowed into the combustion chamber just ahead of the main kerosene/liquid oxygen flow, thus causing the kerosene to ignite and sustain combustion in the engine.

>>8751841
But why?

>> No.8751981

>>8751963
Did you mean the green flash as it started? That's the hypergolic starter fuel, TEA-TEB (tri-ethyl aluminum, tri-ethyl boron mixture). It burns hot on contact with liquid oxygen, which ensures a reliable ignition of the RP-1 (rocket-grade kerosene, a relatively thick fuel oil which is difficult to set on fire).

That's why space is dangerous.
Boiling water everywhere.
More seriously, ice agglomerates on the engine because they actually make the fuel pass through the nozzle to super-chill it.
As to what the ice is, it's most likely unburned fuel/oxidizer from the exhaust.

Hardworking technical people often have very simple, shallow, easily-influenced tastes in entertainment.

Like they hear, "everyone's playing Pokemon GO!" and they put it on their phone, and try it out for a few five minute sessions, then they get on with their 14-hour days, put it away, and forget about it. But they got to be "part of the fun" for a few minutes, and now they have some common ground with the people who watch TV for 3 hours a day and other people who only have a few minutes a day for entertainment, so that's what they're going to talk about when they have to try and inject a little fun.
