That's the complete opposite of field purity. Field purity is how abstract the discipline is. Again, you're conflating field purity with quality. Field purity doesn't mean the field is great. It means it's less involved in implementation details and more of an abstract thing in itself. Mathematics is extremely pure because it abstracts away all real world specific details. Engineering is extremely impure because it deals extensively with real world specific details.

>> No.8732757

Since this isn't a serious thread, I'll ask this here:
What's a brainlet? Explain that meme to me.
I'm worried that I am one. That or I'm just a fuckup. What's the different between a brainlet and a fuckup?

>> No.8732763

>>8732757

Fuckup implies you did something wrong. Brainlet just means you don't have much capacity for intelligent thought. You can be a brainlet and not fuck things up as long as you stay within an environment suited to your capabilities, like McDonalds.

>> No.8732781

>>8732741
>Field purity is how abstract the discipline is

i disagree. i would define purity as a field being as self contained as possible, with no outside input from other fields necessary for advancement.

engineering is pure in the sense that it deals only with the real world and actually requires no formalism or rigor in order to perpetuate its advances.

>> No.8732798
File: 32 KB, 740x308, purity.png [View same] [iqdb] [saucenao] [google]
8732798

>>8732781

>i disagree.

You don't get a choice. It's not a mystery, the meaning of the original comic is very clear. I'm going to quote the explain xkcd article for it here.

https://www.explainxkcd.com/wiki/index.php/435:_Purity

>Now, mathematics has the classifications Pure mathematics (the maths you learned in school, and the subject of the field of maths,) and Applied mathematics (physics, chem, and so on.) Taking this to its logical extreme, the comic arranges the six scientific fields according to the Hierarchy of science, represented by a person on a chart of purity, saying that a field is 'more pure', than the fields depending on it.

Pure maths vs. applied maths is an important distinction for understanding what "field purity" means. You would NEVER call accounting pure maths. Accounting deals with actual instances of money in the real world. Pure maths deal with ABSTRACT objects like functions. There is no real world exponential function you can pick up and examine. It's the abstraction of a concept away from the real world instances that participate in it.

Engineering is all about application. You are completely misunderstanding the meaning of "field purity" by trying to see the discipline of practical, real world application as somehow MORE pure than other disciplines.

Your input is a1, a2, ..., a12. Not an array. So first you'd have to add them into one. (Or rewrite the code that sets a1, ..., a12. But looking at that snippet, rewriting the code might not be a bad idea.)

By using a loop, you need an additional variable (i). And there are 3 additional steps each loop iteration.
- compare value of i (< aN?)
- look up value of i (for a[i])
- increment i by 1

exactly one of n-1, n, or n+1 must be divisible by three (since they're 3 consecutive numbers). if 3|n, then n-1 and n+1 are both even, so 4|(n-1)(n+1). if 3|n-1, or 3|n+1, then n is even, so 4|n^2.

The first part is correct, 3 divides either n, n-1 or n+1, but if 3 divides n, that does not imply n is odd (e.g. n=6). Still, either n is even (which implies 4|n^2) or n-1 and n+1 are even, so the 4 still divides the product

Philosophy is very broad. And logic is most certainly an area encompassed, utilized, manipulated, and scrutinized by philosophy. The scientific method is itself an application of epistemology.

Formal logic within philosophy is intensely rigorous. And while it varies from school to school typically formal logic classes within the philosophy department are comperable to logic classes within the math department. Saying that philosophy is not logic is a bit like saying physics isn't math. Sure they aren't technically the same thing, but it's difficult to say anything of use about the former without the latter.

This often gets quite complex and recursive within philosophy due to philosophy analyzing the same logic used to analyze it so it's not quite a fair comparison, but I think you get the point.

this is in C#, so true != 1, and if you want nice syntax at the cost of a bit of performance, and you have the array bool[] a and then use LINQ, then its just a.Any().
(if you balive LINQ gives performance penalties in all cases).

To be fair, in terms of work output. Using a terminal is far more efficient, it's slower to click through conflated menus than to write 1-2 short commands, which you can do within a couple of seconds.

I know it's a comedic comic strip but yeah.

and which one of these does not involve formalism and rigor?

... oh, you think formalism only refers to corporate policies? mandatory syntax of numeric data entered in a dialog is formalism, too.

what lack of formalism meant in this context is what many people think engineering is really about: tinker blindly with it until it works. that's because most people cannot conceptualize how many orders of magnitude lie e.g. between the complexity of a good pair of scissors and that of an iPad. they think processor architectures are discovered accidentally by tinkering. no joke, I've met many such people.

>only use is in missle gyroscopes
Gyroscopes/IMUs are amongst the few applications which merit using a metal as rare and costly as beryllium, but that doesn't mean beryllium wouldn't be kickass for a wide range of other applications were it more widely available.
>good metal
It's damn good.
>Significantly lighter than aluminum
>Stiffer and stronger than iron
>More conductive pound-for-pound than any other metal
>Low thermal expansion to boot
>Ideal neutron reflector
>Effective neutron moderator
>Transparent to X-rays
>A tiny percentage of beryllium turns soft copper into the strongest nonferrous alloy in existence
>In mineral form, makes trippy gems like emerald and aquamarine
Beryllium is the shit.

I work as a consultant so I'm regularly thrust in front of new code bases.

Basically read this stuff you think could only ever exist for keks, then picture it written in VBA in a fucking Microsoft Access macro, then picture it as the backend for a website that accepts credit cards and stores them complete with CCV.

Then think about the developer that "deploys code updates" by dragging + dropping updated Access databases from his desktop to a passwordless Samba shares accessible on the Internet.

You wouldn't fucking believe the code that comes out of offshore development.
