some of that shit works, I got a neck injury from a football hitting me in the head in highschool (thrown by a teacher while I wasn't looking no less). It got to the point where I couldn't move my head up and down without pain. Went to a chiro with good reviews and they did some shock shit to some muscles on the back of my neck, massaged it for a bit, sent me home to rest. Helped alot. Went back a week later, same deal but pushed in on some place right on the back of my neck, I heard a big ass pop, and pain was gone.

Yeah the voodoo shit like freeing up energy flows is bullshit, but when you got a joint fucked up, pushing it on it in the right way is probably gonna help.

Nope. 'Chi' is a non-physical phenomena which is associated with physical fluid flows in the body. The Chinese maps of the acupuncture 'meridian' system correspond to microtubules in the superficial fascia, which contain a fluid similar to lymph. It appears that axonoplasmic flow in neurons has a similar association with chi but the ancient Chinese were bright enough to not stick needles in your nerves, so in the west we tend to only hear about meridians.

Freeing soft tissue restrictions allows a better flow of physical fluids and chi. This is simple stuff to bodyworkers who can feel it.

In b4 the usual derping.

Any metaphysical claim is a ridiculous metaphysical claim

>> No.8711979

>>8711962
I fully understand that. Perhaps I should clarify.

* There are multiple forms of spirituality, and many techniques for exploring spirituality, many of which also endorsed by Alan Watts, that require literally no metaphysical claims, and can be practiced entirely on the basis of that which can be directly observed.

Take, for example, several precepts Buddhism. Not necessarily Buddhism itself, but certain frameworks of "philosophical buddhism" as distinct from "religious buddhism", which would include metaphysical or supernatural claims.

Such a framework is essentially a set of techniques to explore very carefully one's subjective experience, and to cope with emotional and existential distress, which is more or less the secular definition of spirituality.

>> No.8712064

>>8711979

>a set of techniques to explore very carefully one's subjective experience, and to cope with emotional and existential distress

The term for this would be a philosophy, much like Stoicism or Cynicism or Humanism. The phrase "secular spirituality" is somewhat of an oxymoron.

I also have a hard time believing it promotes prostate cancer when the article says
>Estrone and prostate cancer risk in men: As far as the estrone levels Maruyama et al. measured in their 2010 study are concerned it is very difficult to tell, whether or not the 26% increase in E2 levels is or isn't a problem.
>The estrone values in the Maruyama study are unrealistic. With a normal range of <68pg/ml the subjects in the Maruyama study would have elevated E1 levels to begin with, if the measurement was correct.
>difficult to tell
>unrealistic
and
>What remains to be seen, though, is whether future epidemiological evidence will support or refute the currently heralded hypothesis that dairy consumption increases prostate cancer risk and whether we will be able to identify more feasible explanations for this relations than those that are implicated by the results Maruyama et al. present in their 2010 study.

I don't think Alan Watts ever tried to pawn himself off as a scientist nor a replacement for science though - so much as just boiling down eastern mysticism for the masses. I don't recall him denying science, if anything he applauds it, only warning of the consequences of purely materialistic thinking, at best. Less pseudoscience, more pseudoreligion.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdqVF7-8wng
^ I don't have any real problem with basic advice like that.

Not familiar with Joe Rogan, isn't he just a comedian?

I *am* sadly familiar with Spirit Science. I think the kid that made it tried to set up a pyramid for the 2013 apocalypse not far from me. Was half tempted just to check it out for the lulz, save that I half-feared I'd end up being witness to a Heaven's Gate incident when the magnetic poles failed to shift.

His shit's funny though - but I fear for anyone who takes it more seriously than say the X-Files... But then again, lots of people take the X-Files seriously.

I'd need a link. I suppose I've not read him in-depth and not that I don't recall some basic allusions towards quantum mechanics showing that we're all connected or some shit, but even the Dalai Lama does much the same - don't think that makes him a pseudoscientist.

I'm sure he references attraction theory some, but that's actually part of eastern mysticism, and cognitive self-actualization therapy is actually part of psychology. Positive thinking may not be magic, but it's nonetheless a thing.

Specifically I'm thinking of a quote in page 64 of "The Book: on The Taboo against Knowing who you are," where Watts off-handedly says that current trends in biology contradict an "automatic model" of the universe. The "fully automatic model" Watts speaks of is the naturalistic view of the universe in which the origin and function of life can be explained by the laws of matter. Watts is in no uncertain terms claiming that biology supports a teleological model, when it does nothing of the sort.

NTG, but there's a difference between spouting mystical woo, and claiming science backs your mystical woo (or worse, as with so many other examples in this thread, deriving your mystical woo from misnomers of science.)

Not that I think Alan Watts does that sort of thing often enough to really be accused of pseudoscience. Unlike, say, "The Secret" it's not core to any of his espoused philosophy, and barely ancillary to it, if at all.

My biology teacher is TRULY religious and believes in chinese medicine.
I mean, nothing against being religious, but shouldn't a biologist know that the Earth was formed about 4.5 billion years, instead of 6000 years ago?!
Also, he truly believes in chinese medicine. He said that our emotions are somewhere in the stomach, or something near by. God, why.

>> No.8723189

>A meta-analysis found chiropractic care to be equally beneficial compared to physical therapy.

You've totally missed the point even though you stated it right here. Chiropractors are taught pseudoscience, so while the odd intervention may happen to be effective, there's no general way for a lay person to separate out the bullshit.

If something chiropractors use is shown to work, science-based physiotherapists will adopt it and then there's no reason to go to the chiropractor again.

Vegetarianism is legit, not because of ethics or health, but because producing meat is very infeasible for the environment. Cattle literally farts out our atmosphere and the grounds needed for their living spaces could be used better for crops. There's a reason why the UN has food programs based on sustainable agriculture for the undeveloped countries. Yet we've been eating meat for so long that is deeply embeded within sociocultural practices of nowadays. Thus causing the loop for the artificial need of meat.

Physiotherapists tend to either give exercises or ultrasound. Very few of them work with their hands. Those do tend to do manipulation, the cracking techniques, which do have some evidence of efficacy and neurology behind them.

Physiotherapists however aren't trained in palpation, which is the most important aspect of any manual therapy. Argue me if you like, but if you are any kind of manual therapist who can't feel what is going on in your patient's body then whatever technique you employ is going to be hit or miss at best.

The combination of skilled palpation, a model of function which recognises biomechanics and the body as a functional unit, biopsychosocial considerations, and practical manual techniques then becomes an art in the hands of the skilled practitioner. Treating the patient as an individual rather than a condition is a strength of any competent manual therapy, not a weakness to be ironed out by so-called 'evidence based medicine' or the one size fits all horror of 'best practice'.

Which is missing the point almost entirely. "What is wrong", in some cases may be a discrete clinical entity which has only one or two possible modes of treatment, e.g. nerve root compression causing neurological deficit in an essential function such as urination, an emergency, but for the vast range of other aches and pains, treating the person rather than the condition is the model of choice. Of course there will be some treatments which a practitioner may apply more frequently to common disorders, but these will always be given within the context of treating the individual.
