Is there a correlation between musical preference and IQ?

This song is highly preferential, and my IQ is 130

I think there is a correlation between mathematical ability and music taste.

High IQ is not always useful, hard work gets you a LOT further in life than the genetic gift you lucked into.

130 is not particularly special. 150+ you become an interesting child, because we can advance you must faster and you will be able, with the right guidance to influence a particular field, contributing to it by your early 20s.

130 is just basic top <10% of population, it means you could do almost any non-athletic/physical driven profession, and you have the potential to be a high income earner.

130 with a SHIT memory or terrible habits means you're just another flake, there have been a lot of them throughout human history they get sieved out with all the other refuse and human trash that makes up the middle of the bell curve.

I've met a few children who score high 100s and what makes them particularly exceptional is patience and pattern recognition. So I suspect you could 'game' the IQ test with enough preparation, which leads me to believe testing for IQ after say age 10 is irrelevant.

Work ethic > IQ

My personal opinion is that rap music is restless, and people who listen to it, much like people who listen to metal are desperate to unleash their creative energy into the world, but lack the experience or determination to do so on their own- they funnel their frustration and inadequacy into a music that is equal parts anger and passive resistance.

Pop music is mana from heaven, to feed those who require mental sustenance but do not have the ability to feed themselves.

Classical music is simply mechanistic appreciation for something difficult. Much like watching people construct a massive bridge is equal parts relaxing, enthralling and boring.

Almost all music follows the trope of the hero's epic, myth and legend. It's a way to convince young people to obey a certain standard of behavior, young men get a virgin, young women get a hot dicking.

People of above average intellect, on the most part, are critical about their tastes, and that includes music. They are not content with just listening a song and digging it. Even if they are not knowledgeable about music, they will analyze some aspects of each song. Thus, they will be leaning to the more complex genres.
That being said, a small percentage of intelligent people don't care about that and will just listen to the music without thinking about it, like a chad who will listen to pop just because it is played on clubs, but doesn't study much and still gets good grades.

>listening to music

protip: enjoying music automatically makes you a brainlet

think about it. What is music? It's just vibrations in the air. It's basically just repeated patterns in the frequency of vibrations over and over. Our "enjoyment" of music strictly boils down to how we interpret the patterns and recognize the repetition in the brain.

That's why more intelligent people tend to listen to more complex music patterns. The more and more intelligent you get, the less and less likely you are to listen to mainstream music, and eventually you reach a point where no music at all is enjoyable. The patterns of every songs just becomes predictable and boring.

It's yet another disadvantage to being to smart, desu I truly envy the dimwitted in their ignorance and ability to still enjoy things as simple minded as a few chords strung together to a beat

It's a fact that the more complex a pattern is in music, the more difficult it is for your brain to make sense of it.
So if your brain is better at discerning patterns, then you should in theory be able to enjoy more complex music.

However, that doesn't necessarily mean you will. Musical taste is something that develops over time based on what you've listened to before.

This is ridiculous right on its face. Highly intelligent people can still enjoy simple-minded activities like eating good food, having sex, exercising, etc.

Before you say music isn't like those, think again -- at least 50% of people report physical sensations (usually chills) when they listen to music they really like. That's consistent with neurological research as well.

Psychedelic trance has become my preferred genre as of late since it's great to listen to when doing work. You just sorta go into a trance and start using more than 10% of your brain it's great. Pretty much like hitting that XTC with no side effects (although you could do both simultaneously, I've tried)

>I will combat your autism with my own autism and probably wrong opinions.

Pop music is a petri dish of formulaic sounds that are easily palatable by the masses. There is no creative license involved and I dislike it.

Classical can be enjoyed, but it requires a certain degree of musical understanding to fully appreciate their arrangements, a lot like jazz or prog. Different eras, different experiences, different preferences. Basically music but for musicians and connoisseurs of music.

Metal is pure escapism that represents an aspect of the psyche that we are frequently told to never express. It is heavy and thunderous in atmosphere, a welcome detour from the norm and something that I personally like. It just feels good to listen to. Metal heads routinely tend to be the most creative people I know, and the most invested in music - many of whom have at the very least tried to learn an instrument and were better off for it.
I do not understand rap or its origins, but I feel like the appeal resides in the culture behind it. I simply cannot relate to anything Snoop Dog has to say, I still like him though and I am sure that there are many more people who CAN relate to what Snoop Dog is say and like him even more.

rap breaks musical rules because it's an attempt by blacks to overthrow the established structure and order of society. rock and roll did the same thing in early blues music, before it was co-opted and mass marketed to a white audience (elvis). Blacks are simply more talented when it comes to music, rhythm, dance. It comes more naturally to them, and this is not necessarily a black thing, its a poor people thing.

Poor people have a richness in song, dance and dress, because they are forced to improvise with very little. See pan flute music, gypsy flamenco and spanish guitar.

The deep appeal of all rap music is it's contradictions. American blacks feel inferior, so they elevate themselves through hyperbole to British royalty/16th century slave master status- to revert history and as an ironic callback to their current situations. Remember a slave both loves and hates his bondage, that's why this word exists. If it was only hate, man would rather die than live a slave.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-l0DOsg3PhI

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hR9F8t39Az4

Here is an example of Hip Hop. You can also listen to early Wu Tang to understand what they were trying to do. (A cry for help to raise awareness at the crippling economic well blacks are in).

Old School hip hop and rap are basically Shakespeare. For poor people by creative poor people - consumed by the masses.

That said, you need to be a brainlet to actually like this shit.

to give you contrast this is what rap is today:

(fresh/cutting edge)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ll0XbB3GxuA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paBL56Iu1Ao

20+ years later, notice the anger is still there, because it's music for poor people by poor people etc.

It's also heavily incorporating postmodernism, you're only a _real_ artist now if you reject the studio contracts and deliver your music directly to your audience.

compare it to soft/fake shit:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34Na4j8AVgA

(sold to white middleclass teenagers).

It all sounds the same to me. Again, you need to be sub 150 IQ to even begin to even discern this from animal bleets. But thorough analysis on anything is easy, objectively music is the only way people can organize and resist- this is why authoritative regimes heavily control the allowed music, and always have particular styles of militaristic and patriotic songs which promote nationalism, loyalty, bravery, sacrifice etc.

We hear words all the time. The only way to appreciate music's more musical aspects is to listen and pay attention to a lot of it. Most people are more likely to appreciate good lyrics than a good melody

On that note, I used to like power metal an awful lot, then hip-hop (probably had a lot to do with my mental state; one's pure chaos and the other's rather chill)

All pop sounds the same. Arguably, I'd say it's worse now because 'singers' don't have to even hit the right note anymore. Lots of people get away with repeating verses now, too.

Nonetheless, I listen almost exclusively to rap, the "dumb nigger" music. Why?

Because I love how antisocial it is. It consist out of nothing but pure narcissism, bragging, praise of violence and disdain for anything lower than oneself. I feel that this perfectly reflects my personality. The other types of music usually praise love or other types of connection with other people which I never felt. The exception is obviously something like classical music, but it bores me too quickly for me to finish listening to long-ass one hour composition without any vocals.

There is litteraly a way to measure correlation in statistics.
What the fuck guys, I am new to this board. Is there any smart people here or am I wasting my fucking time?
These replies are just so stupid.

>Pop music is a petri dish of formulaic sounds that are easily palatable by the masses. There is no creative license involved and I dislike it.
But the messages carried can be variable and can be creative. The fact that it is so easily absorbed makes it a powerful carrier for whatever message you're trying to send, but that message has to be translated almost entirely into lyrics because the rhythm itself is often empty.

It's like reading a paragraph from a book over and over to the some prebuilt beat.

I do think of Ellie Goulding as an exception, at least Lights/Bright Lights. Man I love that album. Has that "mana from heaven" vibe that the other guy was talking about.

I didn't think it was possible in a thread of more than 200 replies, but not a single compelling piece of music was posted.

I have to wonder then, are smart people just lovers of autistic or "weird for the sake of weird" music, or alternatively, is this board just not composed of smart people in the first place?
