does anyone have any idea what magnification was used in order to achieve this image? i know it was created using an electron microscope but i cant find the magnification value anywhere....what would be your best educated guess ?

Like a million million million million million.
Or something like that.

According to this
http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/anatomy/brain/Neuron.shtml
a neuron is from 4 to 100 µm in diameter.

i know the electron microscope caps at 50.000.000x so you might not be super far off...but i was interested in an answer that hits bit closer to home

That's huge. 10 neurons of 100 µm aligned would easily be visible!

Here's some neurons on a MCS MEA from my research. I'm a computer scientist so don't ask me about biology, but you can make out some of the features of neural nets such as axons and clustering.

Oh yeah the electrodes (black dots) are ~15µm in diameter

so in order to be able to see something that's 10 microns you'll need like 100.000x magnification ?

I wonder how you could help the neurons cluster to the electrodes.

it can. all it thinks about is how can it penetrate faster that sweet sweet egg membrane

Possibly we could use the electrodes to guide neurons to grow closer to them. Currently we're attempting to use the neuron clusters as computational elements, which is pretty fucking hard considering that they're both vastly complex and a moving target. We have also considered drugs or topological changes, but we don't want to change the setup until we're reasonably sure we need the extra precision, reducing bias and all that.
