I just bought this book and I was wondering if anyone was familiar with it. If so, thoughts?

Also, general book thread. Any recommendations?

Opinion discarded. There is not a shred of knowledge in Bible, that I couldn't induce from other better sources.

It's pretty fast this week actually. It's not uncommon that a thread stays in the catalog for 1.5 days, even if nobody posts anything in it.

Regarding your book, I don't think the content is bad, but it's "too ambitious", meaning it's a silly idea to cover that range of topics with the intended audience of people who know nothing.
The people who'd get the book and not an textbook, covering 1/10 of the topics mentioned (not covered) in that book, those people will not have the motivation to finish it. You'll have to come here too often asking for elaborations on concepts, making you think you should start with a textbook after all or just give up the book and "read it when you have time" (never).

It's the most influential book in the entire Western canon ...

This is what I figured.

It's not something I intend to read cover to cover but it seems like it'll be interesting to pluck things here and there.

And yet it remains endlessly referenced in everything. I am afraid that even science is not immune from the cultural influence of the Bible, regardless of what you believe.

As much as you might hate it, the Bible worms its way into any discussion on philosophy, metaphysics, ethics etc., and these things DO crop up on /sci/, even if its just trolley problem memes.

What are you looking for, exactly?

Are you looking for popsci, or are you considering some actual study?

Most of the concepts you're referring to are not unique to Christianity and were invented long before.

I sympathize with the Christianity of Eckhart or Kierkegaard, and the Bible is a fascinating piece of literature, but scripture only serves to pollute scientific discussion.

Something academic, but go easy.
