>Western children first show signs of mirror self-recognition (MSR) from 18 to 24 months of age, the benchmark index of emerging self-concept. Such signs include self-oriented behaviors while looking at the mirror to touch or remove a mark surreptitiously placed on the child’s face. The authors attempted to replicate this finding across cultures using a simplified version of the classic “mark test.” In Experiment 1, Kenyan children (N = 82, 18 to 72 months old) display a pronounced absence of spontaneous self-oriented behaviors toward the mark. In Experiment 2, the authors tested children in Fiji, Saint Lucia, Grenada, and Peru (N = 133, 36 to 55 months old), as well as children from urban United States and rural Canada. As expected from existing reports, a majority of the Canadian and American children demonstrate spontaneous self-oriented behaviors toward the mark. However, markedly fewer children from the non-Western rural sites demonstrate such behaviors. These results suggest that there are profound cross-cultural differences in the meaning of the MSR test, questioning the validity of the mark test as a universal index of self-concept in children’s development.

You would think, but how many people of northern european ancestry do you think live in Kenya vs North America? There are too many variables to know for sure but with a large enough sample size the results of the test could still indicate differences in race. One race performing above average on the MSR test and, being a larger percentage of the population for one of the coutries in question would improve that countries average performance given a random sample of test subjects from that population. The only way to know for sure would be to perform the test with samples of children divided by race within the same country, i dont think race deniers would like the results though. At 18 months what does your upbringing have to do with your cognitive perfomance? Aside from basic nutrition, you still havent learned how to communicate very well bidirectionally with the outside world. Sure you can signal if you are hungry or sleepy but, society really hasnt started to make an impression on you until you can understand the people around you based on more than body language. So at the point that most Canadian and US babies are passing the test they have mostly only been influenced by their genetics and thier own thoughts. Of course this is all just my own logical deduction, none of it is hard fact, though i would be interested to see a counter arguement.

That article doesnt say it specifically but would you not say self recognition is a precursor to sapience, which itself is a precursor to intelligence? Intelligence has somewhat of a fuzzy definition depending on who you ask. However, I dont think you could make an arguement against the fact that problem solving and tool use (provided the necessary genetic code to use said tool, for example hands or, in the MSR test eyes) are strongly correlated and, are indicative of intelligence.
