Currently finishing my Master's in Mathematics at TU München.
No complaints here, I don't regret my choice. TUM is more focused on application than LMU AFAICT, and they basically force you to do internships and get connected to industry, so if you're looking for a nice job, that definitely helps. Personally, I'm more inclined to do a PhD, which I also feel quite well-prepared for. Overall, I can recommend TUM for Mathematics.

A fuckton of faculty work on LHC stuff, a number do CMB research, and we even were a part of the gravitational waves stuff. NPRE has some top-tier plasma-materials interactions research going down. I know an ECE lab is doing tunnelling FET research. There are plenty of opportunities in the astronomy department.

Maybe some of the high-profile people are leaving because the state's budget is fucked, but there are still tons of opportunities.

I have found that after getting through Calc and the fucking 21X courses, and moving out of the dorms, the number of mouthbreathers you interact with declines sharply.

What are some good graduate programs in Physics outside the USA? Besides the famous ones in Europe (Oxford, Cambridge, École Polytechnique etc)?

ECE. I don't know about the rest but it's pretty fucked here since all the high profile faculty are either retired, about to retire, leaving, or dead.

For example, the antennas and electromagnetics group is now down to something like 5 grad students tops after everyone either graduated or dropped out last year, and many grad and undergrad level courses are being cut because they aren't attracting any new students. The only undergraduate antennas course got deleted this semester with no replacement whatsoever because the antennas faculty just straight out gave up.

They're hiring some new guys and some seem promising but I'm still highly skeptical of the university's ability to attract top faculty because of its relatively unknown status, crappy location and bad funding.

All I know about the physics department is that we have the number 1 condensed matter physics program in the US. So basically the only career prospects coming out of that is teaching or research in academia. But the thing is, we don't place our PhDs well at other places. I count more Cornell guys than UIUC guys at CMP groups at other universities routinely. Which is pretty fucking depressing

I got into the Bio chem at Toronto, but went to Guelph for a bigger scholarship + nicer campus + (less asians).
Not 100% sure if I made the best choice, but the campus is beautiful as all hell and I'm not in Toronto anymore, so that's nice.

Shit man, sucks to hear about the antennas stuff if that is what you were hoping to do. You should still be able to get a job though. I have a few ECE friends who all graduated and got jobs related to stuff thet did in clubs, such as renewable energy. But how many groups does ECE have? In physics it seems like each professor sort of has their own 'group' with a handfull of grad students and undergrads, and those are part of larger groups like High Energy Physics, or Theoretical Astrophysics, or Physics of Living Cells.

The bad funding is arguably the worst issue. That is the only real thing stopping top faculty from joining. It doesnt seem like it, but UIUC is actually surprisingly well known outside of illinois in the sciences, at least among people who have been in tbe field. Other students might not because it its MIT HARVARD STANFORD XD, but any professor or company worth their shit in the sciences is familiar with it. Hopefully the university takes some proactive action with the budget though.

Physics is also up there in particle/nuclear. It's purely ancedotal, but I have run into a number of graduates at conferences who now work at national labs.

Why can't schools just get more funding?
