Why are diamonds the hardest metal? Couldn't scientists make them harder by just putting more atoms in them?

>> No.8482783

Diamond is a tetrahedral arrangement of carbon atoms. So could we make diamond stronger if we made it a hexahedral, octahedral, or decahedral instead?

I don't think Carbon can expand its octet like that.

Not a metal

>> No.8484790

because adding more atoms to a diamond could be dangerous, i guess adding more particles to a metal could make it super-electricity-conductive as the electrons would be compressed and thus expelled more easily
honestlyhaving diamonds blow out because htey are so reactive isnt agood marketing strat my dude

Why can't we put a diamond inside a diamond so it becomes a double diamond harder than just one?

It's a bit counter-intuitive but increasing the density of a metallic complex actually increases the electrical impedance and thus makes it less conductive. Conductance doesn't scale linearly with density and will only increase to a point after which it begins to drop. This happens because as you add metal atoms the conduction channels between them for electrons to flow through become more and more narrow restricting the maximum current that can flow through the entire metallic complex. If you could make a metal infinitely dense it would have an infinite resistance because there would be no conduction channels to allow electron flow.

no, these solids dont fill up a 3d plane like a tetrahedral arrengement does

Aren't they the hardest metal because 1 gram of diamond weighs something like 15 grams?

no
more atoms = more diamods
It is proven that 2 things can not be in the same place

Lol why not just take two diamonds and hammer them together, forcing the "octet" (whatever gay shit that is) to "expand" (lolwut?) and mushing them together into a mega-diamond? Scientists are such idiots.

the theorem is only applicable to massive houses
though

Cardboard is pretty strong for being made of paper.

But when you crush cardboard it becomes flimsy.

Cardboard is the second hardest metal known to man.

We can make exotic compounds and structures if we apply Jupiter/Mariana's Trench levels of presure, like Na3CL or weird things like that.
