Well, in most fields it's because the non-brainlets are busy doing important work. But in mathematics that's obviously not true so I'm not sure OP.

I remember one of my linear algebra professors back in 1st year undergrad was really shitty at teaching, but goddamn his mental arithmetic was on point. The fucker could multiply 4x4 matrices together in his head as well as mentally calculate their determinants.
