Can we all agree that math has no intrinsic value?

>> No.8406674

yes, sure.

>> No.8406675

What is intrinsic value at all?

>> No.8406684

>>8406664

In the strict sense and insofar as, as nearly as we can tell, the world itself is devoid of instrinsic value, yes, math has no intrinsic value.

However as any thoughtful person who is busy with actually living in the world can tell you, the capacity for quantitative abstract reasoning which is the content of mathematics, is immediately and helpfully applicable to the rest of science, medicine, supply chains, modern work in general, and so on. So it's pretty clear that math has a value, it's just that that value is a localized "in-this-life" thing that we use to hopefully make our lives easier and more pleasant, and not intrinsic value-as-such. But distinguishing between these two is academic, and so the average person is completely uninterested in the distinction, stopping short of full intellectual honesty at the point of saying that "math is useful" if he is properly educated and actually understands that it is a good thing to be able to do elementary algebra during the ten minutes that the power goes out, once in a while. Further, some of us are autistic enough to genuinely enjoy studying it and doing it for its own sake, even having made such a broad admission as the one at the beginning of this post.

Pragmatic value - training to understand complex math does wonders for decision making if you remain balanced out.

Intellectual value - the observed structure of reality can only be properly visualized with a very solid understanding of math.

Aesthetic value - shits beautiful as shit

If you're talking about intrinsic value outside a given affected agent than you're retarded.

This reminds me of Einstein's puzzle 99% of people can't answer:

Three gnomes are taken to a sorcerer's lair. They are shown five hats, three of which are white and two of which are black. They are then blindfolded and one of the hats is placed on each gnome's head. The gnomes are then placed in a way that, when the blindfolds are removed, they can see the hats of the other two but not their own. The sorcerer then claims he will let them go if any of them can guess their hat colour correctly, and will turn all of them into frogs if any of them gives a wrong answer. The gnomes are silent for a few minutes until one of them answers correctly.

What colour is the gnome's hat if they know the hats are from the collection shown to them and none of them is retarded? Remember, even Einstein and Gödel got this wrong, and Grothendieck became a hermit to solve this.

>> No.8407734

>>8407727
There are three possible combinations:
3 white hats
2 white hats, 1 black hat
1 white hat, 2 black hats

If any gnome would see 2 black hats, he'd immediately know his own hat and say it. Since that doesn't happen, option three is out.

Every gnome knows now that there are either 3 white hats or 2 white hats and a black hat. Seeing two white hats means nothing, since you can still have the black hat yourself. So any gnome that sees two white hats stays silent at first. On the other hand, seeing a black and a white hat would immediately tell the gnome his own hat color (white). Again, that doesn't happen.

Therefore, all gnomes see two white hats and conclude that their own hat is white as well.

It took me years to prove it implies a white hat. Einstein was a great man. Not only did he avocadocate the quantum mechanics with his famous phrase "God plays dice", he was also a bright mathematician proving stuff about polynomials and a brilliant director who directed a film about Alexander the Great.
