It's easy to learn how to use them and there's tutorials all over the internet. It's pretty fun once you get the hang of it.

Like abaci and manipulating equations on paper, slide rules give you an incremental path toward doing it in your head, which calculators don't.

If you use a slide rule enough, you also develop a visual/tactile memory of its workings. You're constantly looking at the fixed scales and lining them up in your hands. Over time, you'll effortlessly anticipate what the slide rule will say, and use it only for increased precision above your instant awareness of the approximate answer.

This is a tremendous benefit to rapid estimates, and is probably a signficant contributor to the seemingly prodigious feats of mental calculation common among scientists and engineers of the early-mid 20th century.

letme suggest a new oath for the Atheist-fags in the thread:
>... I will henceforth, not suffer or pass, or be privy to the passing of, bad workmanship or faulty material in aught that concerns my works before mankind as an engineer, or my dealings with definitely nothing spiritual, my lord Charles Dawkins, and the void.

now you can stop complaining. and be irresponsible engineers because you have no god and no moral obligation.

>> No.8400428

>>8399249
traditions can be good. The oath does not have to be taken in the context of theism, but it is still important. the oath makes you promise that your entire being will be dedicated to ensuring that you place the lives and safety of others in your works before the wealth to be obtained. The Rings are made from a collapsed bridge that killed hundreds of thousands of people because the engineers were no obligated to follow any descent moral code. Because the engineers were not obliged, they were able to produce and buy cheap materials that made the bridge kind-of-sort-of safe to cross. It is a reminder to engineers of their civil duty, and lets those who put morals in second place that their status as an engineer can be removed, just like the ring.

Consider this.

Only Toronto still has rings made of iron, IIRC, and they're optional. All other rings nowadays are made of stainless steel.

Set the times back and test what you can do without a PC, a calculator or such stuff. A slide ruler, divider, pencil and your brain, it helps to see the things you are about to invent more clear. I use it for basically contemplations
