I am currently studying mathematics while taking muay thai classes. Should I be worried about taking punches to the head? I use a mouth guard every time we spar, and I never feel like my head hurts after training. Will I become too retarded for complex analysis and topology which I'll be having next semester? Help me medfags.

not a medfag, but i did box for 3 years during hs + freshman year.
Mouthguard does almost nothing for blunt force trauma to the head, it's just to stop you from biting your tounge off.
I can tell you just from my own experience, there was definitely a price i paid. I'm not nearly as sharp as I used to be, and I know it's not because the material in school is harder. I also never got knocked out and very rarely got headaches. No one gets away with getting repeatedly punched in the head with no consequences, for others it's just much worse.
As far as actual science goes, research has shown that you don't need massive trauma for brain damage to occur. The punches that knock you out are only significantly worse compared to single non concussive punches, but due to the sheer volume a single day of sparring can be just as bad as a 10 second match where you get knocked out as far as permanent brain damage is concerned. Research shows that most damage is gradual as well. Doing it for 5 years as mayweather is worse than being a really bad boxer for 1 year.
