Geology is interesting (I am a physicist buy I still think geology is cool) but with the oil price collapse the job market is not good.

If there is a shift to nuclear there will be a new need to locate uranium ore. Present resources are sufficient for only 20 years at planned rate of increase (10x more than present power generation).

There is always the academic career but salaries are the pits and academic politics is brutal.

You could try a safer route: study physics and take a graduate degree in geophysics.
